The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP), the principal organisation representing the medical specialty of psychiatry in Australia and New Zealand is seeking an Aboriginal and Torres StraitIslander Mental Health Liaison Officer to support cultural planning for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander membership and staff.

This position is a newly created role and an identified position that will work to implement the RANZCP’s commitment to the provision of culturally appropriate and accessible psychiatric care by and for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Key responsibilities:

  • Supporting RANZCP staff in the development and delivery of Cultural Support Plans for members who identify as being Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.
  • Regularly review and assess progress and outcomes related to improving the RANZCP’s cultural safety and goals to improve Mental Health outcomes for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  • Provide culturally appropriate guidance for planning, including securing culturally relevant endorsement of plans RANZCP is responsible for.
  • Provide advice and support in the coordination of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander projects, including but not limited to the Specialist Training Program (STP) and the Psychiatry Interest Forum (PIF).
  • Build the capacity of service delivery teams to implement culturally sensitive, safe and responsive practice through advice and education provision as required.
  • Keep staff and members updated about events, programs and activities available within the local Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities.

The successful candidate will have:

  • Knowledge and or lived experience on the issues impacting the provision of healthcare for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Peoples and health professionals.
  • Knowledge and or lived experience around the social determinates of health impacting on Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  • Comprehensive understanding of culturally appropriate contemporary engagement with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  • Extensive knowledge of issues impacting on Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities in contemporary society.
  • Ability to communicate appropriately and sensitively with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  • Demonstrated work experience health, public health, policy, or other relevant area.
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in health science and/or business are desirable.
  • Eligibility Requirement: Applicants must be either an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or a New Zealand citizen.
