About :
The Mental Health Division (MHD) provides Mental Health care through a comprehensive range of teams and services to meet the needs of consumers and families/carers throughout Victoria. Services are located across Austin Health and in the community. All Mental Health services work within a clinical framework that promotes recovery-oriented practice and supported decision making. This approach to client wellbeing builds on the strengths of the individual working in partnership with their treating team. It encompasses the principles of self- determination and individualised treatment and care.
About the role:
The Aboriginal Mental Health Liaison Officer (AMHLO) will work across the Infant Child and Youth Mental Health Service (ICYMHS) Directorate of the MHD and will collaborate with leadership and staff in ongoing service development to achieve better outcomes for Aboriginal children anf young eople, their families and carers.
The AMHLO will focus on the children and Families of childrenreferred to ICYMHS The AMHLO will support the delivery of clinical, cultural and spiritual healing journeys by ensuring that Aboriginal chilfren young people and their families and carers are receiving high quality and culturally safe Mental Health care.
A regular day will see you:
Working the ICYMHS leadership group will assist in the development of culturally sensitive policies, practices and processes across the division
Assist Aboriginal consumers and their carer/families to understand Mental Health treatment options and support them to make decisions about their care.
Facilitating a partnership approach with Aboriginal community-controlled health organisations, promoting partnerships and relationship building in the planning and delivery of Mental Health care for Aboriginal young people
Assisting with education and training to hospital staff and community.
About you:
Ideally, you’ll have:

Experience with working effectively with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander consumers and their families/carers and maintaining positive relationships with the local community.
A sound knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture, society and kinship networks.
Experience in, and a thorough understanding of, the cultural issues that may impact local Aboriginal communities accessing Mental Health services.
