Job description

Permanent Part-time working 38 hours per fortnight

The role of an Aboriginal Community Development Officer is multifaceted, requiring a combination of leadership, cultural sensitivity, organisational skills, and a deep understanding of the unique strengths and challenges of the Aboriginal community within our city. This is a unique and exciting opportunity to lead this important work in our community.

About the position

The Aboriginal Community Development Officer plays a crucial role in supporting and enhancing the well-being of the Aboriginal community through various programs and initiatives.

The Aboriginal Community Development Officer is responsible for the development and implementation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community projects, initiatives and events that contribute to community capacity building, fostering leadership and enhance social connection within Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in our city.

The Aboriginal Community Development Officer will work with various stakeholders including residents, community groups and businesses to deliver a range of opportunities for community.

About you

Working as part of a collaborative team in a fast-paced and fun environment – your energy, positivity and passion for Community Development will enable you to deliver successful outcomes for our community.

You will be organised, have excellent time management skills, and professional verbal and written communication skills.

With strong experience in working with Elders, Traditional Custodians, community leaders, delivering cultural events and activities, and facilitating yarning groups, to support meaningful outcomes with and for community.

You will be familiar with working autonomously, while having the ability to work within a team, and collaborate effectively with a range of internal and external stakeholders.

Key Selection Criteria:

  • Community Engagement: Foster positive relationships within the Aboriginal community and establish partnerships with local organisations, government agencies, and other stakeholders.
  • Program Development: Identify community needs and develop programs and initiatives to address these needs.
  • Cultural Preservation: Work to preserve and promote Aboriginal culture and traditions by organising events, workshops, and activities that celebrate and showcase the community's cultural heritage.
  • Networking: Build and maintain a network of contacts within the Aboriginal community, as well as with external organisations and agencies that can contribute to Community Development goals.
