The Role
Must be a person of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander decent- an applicant's race is a genuine occupational qualification and is authorised under Section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1997 NSW.
The Aboriginal Custodial Mental Health Clinician will provide a high standard of care in the assessment, care and management of patients with a lived experience of Mental Health issues, as well as discharge planning and transfer of care whilst in custody. Social and emotional wellbeing is widely understood to be the foundation for Aboriginal people’s physical, mental and spiritual wellness. Social and emotional wellbeing is a holistic concept that recognises the importance of connection to country, culture, spirituality, ancestry, family and community, and how these affect the individual. This holistic view incorporates the Mental Health and physical, social, emotional, and cultural wellbeing of individuals and communities and how they each intertwine. This position will be based at Correctional Centre whilst having a state-wide role, this state-wide role could be completed face-to-face or via telehealth.
The position holder will work within the Justice Health and Forensic Mental Health Network (Justice Health NSW) and Ministry of Health policies, procedures and guidelines as well as Corrective Services NSW and Juvenile Justice NSW rules and regulations as set out in the relevant legislation.
Registered Nurse –
· Current unrestricted authority to practice as a registered nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.
· Three years full-time experience working in Mental Health and post-graduate qualification in Mental Health
Allied Health Professionals –Occupational Therapist Level 3, Social Worker Level 3
· Tertiary qualification in Occupational Therapy and registration with the Occupational Therapy Board of Australia; or tertiary qualification in Social Work and eligibility for membership of the Australian Association of Social Work
Psychologist –
· Tertiary qualification in Psychology and full registration with the Psychology Board of Australia
Counsellor (including Djirruwang Program)
· Must hold as a minimum a bachelor degree in counselling or a related field, or other qualification deemed equivalent by the employer.
Willingness to travel and hold a valid NSW Drivers Licence.
Our location, team, and service
Custodial Mental Health (CMH) is a specialist Mental Health service within Justice Health and Forensic Mental Health Network (the Network) that provides a range of Mental Health services to adults in NSW correctional centres.
Custodial Mental Health is a specialist Mental Health team, which has Mental Health nurses (MHNs), nurse practitioners (NPs), Aboriginal Mental Health Clinicians, psychiatrists, career medical officers (CMOs), and psychiatry registrars who are supported by administrative and managerial staff. CMH clinicians work alongside staff from other Network clinical streams and CSNSW staff, including Psychology, Offender Services and Programs, and Custodial Operations staff in the provision of Mental Health services. Mental health services begin at the point of reception and continue through to release from custody or transfer to another correctional centre.

1. Current authority to practice as a Registered Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, or; a bachelor or postgraduate degree in Occupational Therapy, Psychology or Social Work that provides eligibility for registration with the Occupational Therapy Board of Australia, the Psychology Board of Australia, or eligibility for full membership of the Australian Association of Social Work, or; bachelor degree in Counsellor (including Djirruwang Program).
2. A minimum of 3 years post graduate experience working in Mental Health setting and, if a Registered Nurse, a post graduate qualification in Mental Health, with demonstrated ability to exercise professional knowledge and judgement in meeting complex care requirements.
3. Demonstrated knowledge of and/or experience working within Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities and ability to work in a manner that engenders mutual respect.
4. Demonstrated experience of completing Mental Health assessments and review processes for patients with a lived experience of mental illness.
5. Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
6. Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills, coupled with excellent interpersonal and negotiation skills.
7. Demonstrated ability to multitask and manage complex workloads within agreed timelines.
8. Demonstrated understanding of education principles and clinical teaching skills and ability to identify the education needs of staff and patients.
