Overview

The Yorke and Northern Local Health Network (YNLHN) has a strong commitment to provide accessible, effective and meaningful services to Aboriginal families, individuals and communities living in and visiting the region. YNLHN acknowledges the cultural and social determinants of health and particular complexities affecting the health and well-being of Aboriginal people and the need for a holistic and multi-faceted health approach to service design and delivery.

We have a great opportunity for an Aboriginal Drug and Alcohol Health Worker who will work under supervision, to support and embed a stronger, more sustainable approach to support Aboriginal clients in a primary health setting and delivering cultural safe care.

Working as part of a primary health care team to contribute to population health they will:

  • work with both community and services providing advice, information and assistance for prevention, early identification and harm minimisation for Drug and Alcohol related issues.
  • promote Drug and Alcohol related services, health education and support to the Aboriginal community in the mid north area.
  • assist in the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes and services to meet the needs of Aboriginal people working in conjunction with relevant community groups, health workers and organisations.
  • assist in a multidisciplinary team approach to family health, wellness and safety.
  • extensive liaison is required in respect to other individuals and departments, both within and outside the organisation to ensure clients receive referral to appropriate services that meet their needs. The position also acts as a ‘cultural broker’ between clients and services to provide support and advocacy and ensure services are provided that are sensitive and considerate of Aboriginal culture.
  • the Aboriginal Drug and Alcohol Health Worker will assist in the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes to meet the needs of Aboriginal people and work in conjunction with relevant community groups, health workers and organisations.

Eligibility

Applicants must be enrolled in or willing to undertake studies in Certificate IV in Aboriginal &/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care Practice and be willing to undertake further education, training and other professional development activities relevant to the position.

Previous experience in providing services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people including communities and groups and experience in recognising issues related to mental health, grief, loss and trauma associated with forced removal and the development of appropriate solutions to address the same essential.

Knowledge of Aboriginal culture, models of care and issues related to health service delivery and knowledge of resources/organisations, especially those relating to Drug and Alcohol, social and emotional wellbeing and mental health services available to aboriginal people also essential.

Important Information

Please note that this position is multi-classed as either a OPS3 or OPS2 and classification will be determined by qualifications and experience.
