ABOUT THE ROLES

We have two Family Support Worker vacancies located in Midland.

You will provide a culturally appropriate, in-home practical Family Support service to families who are most at risk of child protection intervention.  

You will assist, foster, and provide direct services to families and children to help children and young people remain within the education systems; support family members in attending counselling services and other external support services as required, increase positive life skills including supporting families to develop and maintain routines, create safe home environments and support with meal planning and cooking. 

You will be positive, non-judgemental and solution focused.

Key responsibilities include;

  • Culturally appropriate provision of parenting skill development to all family members.
  • Maintain a partnership approach with Case Workers/Case Coordinators to work effectively with families, children and young people.
  • Assist, foster and provide direct services to families and children to:
    • Implement strategies to ensure the safety of their children and young people who have been identified as being at risk;
    • Help the children and young people to remain within the education systems;
    • Support family members to attend counselling services and other external support services as required; 
    • Develop an understanding of existing, complimentary support services within their identified community; 
    • Increase positive life skills including supporting families to develop and maintain routines, create clean and safe home environments and support on meal planning and cooking; 
    • Provide practical assistance to families where appropriate in maintaining their accommodation and links to mainstream services as well as Aboriginal specific services; and family; and 
    • Help implement any skills development and education programs made available to families, children and young people in the target area. 
  • Provide practical support and encouragement, in line with the Support Plan, for families to:
    • Reduce family violence; 
    • Ensure children remain safely with the family;
    • Reduce alcohol and substance abuse;
    • Increase family stability;
    • Maintain appropriate, safe and secure accommodation 
    • Access suitable health services.

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA

  • Demonstrated ability to work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities and understanding of ATSI history
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Family Support including parenting skill development.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with families and children including with ATSI families and children.
  • Demonstrated ability to be part of a team and share knowledge and skills with others in order to deliver a quality service and achieve client outcomes.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and written as well as verbal communication skills.
  • Understands legislation, regulations and external standards that apply to relevant work practices

ABOUT THE FAMILY AND EIFSS PROGRAM

Family Support Workers will work within the Earlier Intervention and Family Support Program or Family Support Networks Program.

The service encompasses strength based approaches to enhance the capacity of families, children and individuals to create a safe, protective environment, to develop skills to enhance their safety and life skills and improve their connectedness to the community and to available resources.

Earlier Intervention and Family Support - in partnership with Wungening and Centrecare - have established an integrated approach to delivering the Department of Communities Child Protection and Family Support (CPFS) Building Safe and Strong Families: Earlier Intervention and Family Support Strategy (the EIFS Strategy).

Family Support Networks – in partnership with Wungening and Centrecare - have established an integrated approach to delivering the Department of Communities – Child Protection and Family Support (CPFS) Family Support Network Family Support Networks provide integrated and coordinated secondary Family Support services to improve outcomes for vulnerable children, young people and families and prevent the need for tertiary child protection intervention.
