We have an opportunity for a person from the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community to join our team in Hobart.

TALS specialises in providing advice and support in the areas of criminal, civil and family law to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander persons living in Tasmania, and does so in a culturally appropriate and supportive way. We also contribute to policy and law reform.

We are an inclusive organisation and work passionately to support Aboriginal communities across Tasmania.

The role

The Aboriginal Liaison Officer plays a critical role in linking TALS and all the Aboriginal communities in Tasmania. Working closely with our Lawyers, they ensure clients can access the service and support they need as they navigate various legal and social challenges.  

This is a full time position through to 20 December 2024, with the possibility of extension.

This is an identified position. TALS considers being Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander is a genuine occupational requirement. We adopt the Commonwealth definition of Aboriginality.

Essential attributes

  1. A strong commitment and understanding of the Tasmanian Aboriginal culture and communities, and the ability to build effective relationships with members of all communities and supporting organisations.
  2. A deep understanding of the legal and social issues faced by the Tasmanian Aboriginal communities.
  3. Relevant qualifications and/or experience in supporting vulnerable people with general and daily needs and where necessary navigate complex issues and have difficult conversations. 
  4. Good written, verbal and IT literacy skills, with an ability to write clear and concise emails and or letters to existing and potential clients and easily build rapport and trust with clients and other stakeholders.
  5. The ability to work in a multiskilled, high pressure, client focused environment. Including at outreach locations which require travel. 
  6. Excellent time management and computer skills, navigating various systems and reporting requirements.
  7. Demonstrated ability to show initiative, resourcefulness, and personal resilience.

Requirements

The successful candidate will need to undergo a National Police Check and apply for a Working with Vulnerable Persons registration. 

A current driver’s licence is required, as travel may occur across Tasmania.
