Overview

The Aboriginal Family Birthing Program aims to improve birth outcomes for Aboriginal women and their families by providing culturally appropriate antenatal, birthing and postnatal care within a continuity of care framework with ongoing family support up to six weeks following the birth.

The Aboriginal Maternal and Infant Care (AMIC) Trainee / Practitioner will work as part of a primary health care team that includes midwives and doctors in the delivery of antenatal, birthing and postnatal care to Aboriginal women and their families contributing to:

  • Improving access to Maternity Care Services;
  • Assisting families to obtain referral services and linking families to community supports where appropriate;
  • Implementation of high quality and culturally safe services and work practices;
    their psycho-social well-being;
  • Contributing to evidence based practice to meet the culturally related needs of pregnant women and their families.

The AMIC Trainee / Practitioner receives day-to-day supervision, support and on-going clinical training from Registered Midwives, AMIC Practitioners and Doctors within the primary health care team. In a reciprocal arrangement, the AMIC Trainee / practitioner role is to develop the knowledge, skills and ability to provide advice, support and training in cultural issues, traditions and practices and to provide limited clinical care as delegated by the Midwife. Mutual respect for individual role expertise is a critical aspect of the model.

The AMIC Trainee / Practitioner will also be a direct link to the BHFLHN Aboriginal Health Team based in Gawler. Their role will be crucial in ensuring Aboriginal families have a direct connection to the Aboriginal Health clinic/s and programs for ongoing health and wellbeing support during and after the pregnancy.  They will be required to work closely with a multi-disciplinary team of Aboriginal Health Workers, Clinical Midwives, Nurses, GP’s, and Community and Allied health, specifically the Child Health and Development Team.
