What you will be doing:?
An exciting opportunity is available for an Aboriginal Health Worker to join the Aboriginal Mental Health team as an Aboriginal Mental Health Liaison Officer. The Aboriginal Mental Health Liaison Officer has an important role in the care, welfare and assistance of Aboriginal people accessing Mental Health services, both in the hospital setting and within the community.
The Aboriginal Mental Health Liaison Officer will ensure that Aboriginal consumers and their families receive a respectful and culturally responsive and appropriate service and will act as a liaison supporting the consumer, the family and health service staff and will assist with accessing other services relevant to the needs of the person being supported.
The Aboriginal Mental Health Liaison Officer will assist in the planning and implementation of any admission, treatment, case management, referral, discharge and follow up for Aboriginal people utilising Mental Health services.

All NSW Health workers are required to have completed a primary course of a COVID-19 vaccine which has been approved or recognised by the Therapeutics Goods Administration (TGA). Additionally, Category A workers are required to receive a booster dose three months after completing the primary course of COVID-19 vaccinations. New applicants must have completed the vaccination course prior to commencement with NSW Health, or provide an approved medical contraindication certificate (IM011 immunisation medical exemption form) certifying the worker cannot have any approved COVID-19 vaccines available in NSW.
Acceptable proof of vaccination is the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) Immunisation History Statement or AIR COVID-19 Digital Certificate. Booster doses are highly recommended for all health care workers who have completed the primary course of COVID-19 vaccinations.
Employment of a temporary visa holder may only occur if no suitable permanent resident or citizen of Australia has been identified and must not exceed the duration or conditions associated with the current visa.
Selection Criteria to be Addressed:
- Be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent (pursuant to Section 14 (d) of the Anti-discrimination Act).
- Hold a minimum Certificate III qualification in Aboriginal Primary Health Care or a minimum Certificate III health qualification in the relevant area of care. Or, is willing to undertake a minimum Certificate III Aboriginal Primary Health Care (including undergoing recognition of prior learning processes against current qualifications).
- A demonstrated knowledge of the Aboriginal concept of social and emotional wellbeing including an understanding of Aboriginal family structure and Aboriginal culture and wisdom. This will include an understanding regarding the practical and emotional issues that may arise when working with Aboriginal individuals with Mental Health concerns and their families.
- Demonstrated understanding of the social, psychological and financial implications of hospitalisation for Aboriginal consumers.
- Demonstrated understanding of the principles and application of child protection guidelines within NSW Health.
- Demonstrated ability to work both autonomously and as a member of a multidisciplinary team, working within scope of role at all times including ability to plan and prioritise own workload.
- Possess effective written and verbal communication skills, and basic computer skills.
- Current NSW driver licence (P2) acceptable) and willingness to drive for work purposes.
