What you'll be doing
As the Aboriginal Peer Worker you will use lived experience as an Aboriginal person navigating your own mental
health journey to support people using the Mental Health service.
You will build rapport and promote hope for the people you work with.
You will ensure that the care pathways are culturally appropriate and people are given the appropriate support to access other services.
There is also an aim that you will be able to contribute to building the cultural capacity of the service to work with Aboriginal people in environments and systems that are not always appropriate for Aboriginal people.
Applicants for this position must be of Aboriginal descent through parentage, identify as being Aboriginal and be accepted in the community as such. All applicants must supply either a letter of Aboriginality signed under the common seal from a recognised incorporated Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Community organisation such as Land Council or Elders group, Aboriginal Medical Service or a letter on letterhead from a Local Aboriginal Land Council demonstrating membership of the Council.

All NSW Health workers are required to have completed a primary course of a COVID-19 vaccine which has been approved or recognised by the Therapeutics Goods Administration (TGA).
New applicants must have completed the vaccination course prior to commencement with NSW Health, or provide an approved medical contraindication certificate certifying the worker cannot have any approved COVID-19 vaccines available in NSW.
Acceptable proof of vaccination is the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) Immunisation History Statement or AIR COVID-19 Digital Certificate. Booster doses are highly recommended for all health care workers who have completed the primary course of COVID-19 vaccinations. Please provide proof of booster vaccination if available.

- Completion of or willingness to undertake Certificate IV Peer Work - Mental Health qualification.
- Demonstrated ability to advocate for an individual and at a systems level to improve access to culturally safe, quality Mental Health services for consumers.
- Demonstrated sound written and verbal communication skills, and computer literacy with the ability to use relevant software programs (e.g. Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team and actively contribute to the further development of MNCLHD Peer Services and broader Peer Workforce.
- Good organisational and planning skills to organise one's own daily work
- Hold a current Driver's License valid within Australia and ability to travel and work across different locations as required.
