Western Sydney Local Health District (WSLHD) is responsible for providing primary and secondary health care for people living in the Auburn, Blacktown, and The Hills Shire, Holroyd and Parramatta Local Government Areas (LGAs) and tertiary care to residents of the Greater Western Region. What you'll be doing
The NSW Health Education Centre Against Violence (ECAV) is a statewide unit auspiced by Western Sydney Local Health District. ECAV is responsible for multi-sectorial learning, capacity building and workforce development, community development and supervision, in the specialist areas of prevention and response to violence, abuse and neglect (PARVAN).
ECAV aims to ensure that the people of NSW can access culturally safe, high quality, trauma-informed services with practitioners who are diverse, knowledgeable, skilled, ethical and competent in the prevention of and healing from violence, abuse and neglect.
ECAV Senior Statewide Educators are responsible for developing, delivering, evaluating and improving short course training, competency-based education and workforce development programs for NSW Health, other government and non-government agency staff across NSW. Educators may also participate in project management, resource development, forum and event coordination, policy development and other aspects associated with workforce development.
This position works within the Aboriginal Portfolio which focuses on Aboriginal community and workforce development. This Aboriginal Educator will develop, deliver and evaluate community education and training programs for Aboriginal communities, Aboriginal and mainstream Health workers to improve service access and support for communities with a focus the safety and wellbeing of Aboriginal children, young people, families, and communities, and prevention and healing from child and adult sexual assault, family violence, child protection and related trauma.
This position is responsible for coordinating the Strong Aboriginal Men (SAM) Program which aims to increase men’s understanding of trauma, provides opportunities to process their experiences and understand its impact on their attitudes, behaviours and lifestyle choices. This role provides a vital link between the communities and ECAV.

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications including Behavioural Science, Social Work, Psychology or equivalent and holds a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment or willingness to work towards this and holds a Certificate IV in Aboriginal Family Wellbeing and Violence Prevention Work (10619NAT) or willingness to work towards this.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, the ongoing impacts of colonisation, violence, abuse and neglect on Aboriginal communities and health outcomes, and demonstrated understanding of the socio-political context of the experience of Aboriginal people in Australian society and of culturally competent and culturally responsive practices when working with members of Aboriginal communities.
  • Demonstrated experience working in NSW Health VAN and/or related services, providing a range of responses to Aboriginal children, young people, families using and/or experiencing violence, abuse, neglect and problematic harmful sexual behaviours, and sound understanding of ways to support Aboriginal men to take responsibility for choices and behaviours, to heal and grow and make positive changes.
  • Sound understanding of adult education theory and workforce professional development; proven ability to critically analyse emerging issues and practice trends, applying this to the development and delivery of high-quality training programs, with a focus on VAN.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills, insight and exceptional self-regulation skills, capacity to reflect and take responsibility to ensure respectful behaviours, with experience building productive working relationships with a range of stakeholders including Aboriginal communities, Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Health and other workers.
  • Proven ability to work both independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team; effective organisational and time management skills and including proven experience meeting deadlines and competency in Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) with demonstrated ability to learn new record management systems and/or platforms (eg. Office 365, HPE).
  • Willingness to travel within NSW and has a current driver’s license valid in NSW.
