Job description

ACADEMIC ADVISER (PART-TIME) – PERFORM AUSTRALIA ACADEMY

Perform Australia is a registered training organisation (RTO 40859) and a leading provider of performing arts education in the ACT.

Perform Australia Academy is a full-time, specialist performing arts program for students in Years 9-12, offering accredited performing arts training combined with distance education for core academic subjects.

Formerly known as two programs, ‘The Thrive Program’ (Year 7-10) and ‘Young Professionals’ (Year 11-12), we are transitioning to a new, single program as ‘the Academy’, and we are seeking a high school Drama Teacher to lead the charge and serve as Academic Adviser to the program.

The role of Academic Adviser is around 17-20 hours per week onsite at our campus in Griffith.

The Academy Program
The program is aimed at aspiring professional performers – young people who show an aptitude for acting on stage and screen. They learn about acting technique for stage and screen, voice, movement and performance. Their tutors in their performing arts ed are local actors, directors, dancers and vocalists with a significant body of work of their own, many of them award-winning. In academics, students are either using Euka Future Learning or are enrolled with the Cairns School of Distance Education.

Alternative education
Our educational environment is very different from mainstream school! Students have a lot of freedoms that they wouldn’t experience in normal school. But that’s not to say that our teenagers don’t have and need structure, discipline and direction. As Academic Adviser, you will be responsible for ensuring the students are on track with their academic studies and are working well with their peers. An important part of your role is pastoral care, conducting check-ins with each child. While a teaching qualification is required for this role, you do not have to teach at all. That also means – no marking!

The Role
You will have:

  • Drama background, past or present
  • Top notch administrative skills
  • Experience in or knowledge of distance education.
  • A Youth Mental Health First Aid certificate, or counselling skills, will be highly regarded.
  • Good people skills and a willingness to develop a rapport with each child and assist with their particular needs.
  • Secondary teaching qualifications and teacher registration
  • Willingness to liaise with parents and help solve problems that arise
  • Current first aid certificate or willingness to obtain one
  • Reliability

The role includes the following tasks, priorities and responsibilities:

  • Onsite classroom supervision of 10-20 students while they complete their distance education studies online
  • Liaison with the distance education providers
  • Liaison with parents/families
  • Opportunity to teach students in an area of interest if desired, but not essential
  • Collating end-semester reports from the performing arts tutors
  • Tutoring assistance to students who have difficulty understanding their distance education work
  • Assisting and advising performing arts tutors with classroom management questions
  • Planning occasional events and excursions
  • Providing study skills workshops for new students
  • Other administrative duties as required.

Perks of this role

  • A chance to use your teaching skills in a unique educational environment
  • Feel invested in the lives of young people you get to know very well
  • Fewer responsibilities than a classroom teaching role
  • Half-days, five days a week - fit around family or other commitments
  • No lesson preparation (unless you choose to teach a performing arts subject) - the distance education providers take care of academics; you offer support
  • Decorate your own classroom and make it a safe and fun space
  • Work amongst a small team of creative individuals
  • Support young people's education while they develop their passion and expertise.

To apply for this role, please submit a CV and a covering letter addressing the criteria to Elizabeth Scott, CEO, via this website. No other method of submission will be accepted.
