Accountant - The Mission to Seafarers Victoria

The Mission to Seafarers Victoria serves a special place in the life and community of those who live and work at sea, providing comfort, a friendly face, and a sense of community to the thousands of seafarers who visit the Port of Melbourne annually. Established in Melbourne for over 150 years, the organisation works from its distinctive heritage building in Docklands. The Mission, which is an incorporated association, registered charity, and Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR), funds its operations through grants, donations, trading revenue, and investment income.
We are looking for someone with:
- Proven accounting skills and a recognised professional qualification
- Exceptional organisational abilities and the ability to multi-task
- The flexibility to work independently and as part of a team
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Proficiency in Xero, and Microkeeper (or similar), the Microsoft Office Suite, notably Excel
- An understanding of the not-for-profit sector and the obligations of DGRs (desirable).
- Experience in supporting the work of Boards and Committees and an understanding of governance principles (desirable).
Who will:
- Ensure the prompt and accurate processing of authorised transactions and maintain the integrity of the accounting records
- Produce high-quality, informative, and timely management reporting for the CEO and Board
- Monitor the organisation’s short and medium term cashflows, reporting to the CEO
- Assist the CEO in the preparation of budgets, forecasts, costings, grant acquittals, and similar reporting and analysis
- Liaise with the external auditors with respect to the preparation and audit of the annual financial statements
- Ensure the organisation’s compliance with relevant taxation and similar statutory and regulatory requirements
- Provide secretarial services to the Board and its Sub-Committees, supporting the CEO in the development of agendas, the preparation of papers, and minute-taking.
