We are looking for a Communities and Communications Advisor to coordinate and support Communities & Social Performance (CSP) activities For Rio Tinto's Bell Bay Aluminium smelter.

This role is a great opportunity to focus on technical Communities and Social Performance (CSP) related disciplines such as stakeholder engagement, community relations, social impacts, community investment programs and Communications.

In this role you will work closely with the Principal Advisor, Communities & Communication at Bell Bay as well as operational and CSP leaders and play an integral part in engaging with Bell Bay Aluminium's (BBA) diverse workforce and neighbouring communities. This role will suit someone with broad community relations and communication experience who's ready to take their career to the next level.

Reporting to the Principal Advisor Communities and Communications and working in a collaborative, exciting environment within the Aluminium APAC Communities and Social Performance team you will:

  • Support the site general manager and principal advisor to develop and maintain strong relationships with external community stakeholders through proactive, effective, and impactful engagement and communication.
  • Work with community partners and stakeholders to develop, programs, activities, and events, which address areas of mutual interest.
  • Coordinate community commitments and local partnerships, such as Bell Bay's community grants program and Beacon Foundation partnership, reporting on milestones, performance, and value.
  • Support the effective management of social risks.
  • Support communications strategies and plans for BBA and actively engage with frontline employees and leaders
  • Support content development, distribution and publication of internal and external communications including newsletters, digital screens, annual reports, events, presentations, media releases, BBA website and social media platforms.

What you'll bring

  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team.
  • Experience in Stakeholder Relations or Community Relations is essential
  • Excellent relationship building and influencing skills with an ability to build and maintain credibility and rapport with a range of diverse stakeholders.
  • High level professional communication skills including written communication.
  • Multimedia skills would be advantageous.
  • Capacity to work in a multi-task environment and demonstrate comprehensive administrative, organisation and time-management skills.
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications and/or a University Degree in a related discipline such as Community Relations, Communications or Marketing.

Where you will be working

Bell Bay Aluminium (BBA) holds a unique place in Tasmanian and Australian history as the first aluminium smelter in the southern hemisphere when it began production in 1955. Today, it produces around 190,000 of primary aluminium each year.

The smelter is situated on the Tamar River, approximately five kilometres from George Town and 45 kilometres from Launceston.

The smelter has a long and proud history of contributing to the Tasmanian community through enduring relations built on mutual respect, collaboration, and genuine partnership.
