Job description

Department for Education
Job reference: 602659
Location: 5000 - ADELAIDE
Job status: Long Term Contract
Eligibility: Open to Everyone

Why work with us:

Every child and young person deserves a great education.

We have a strategy that aims to unlock every child’s potential now and into the future, one that in partnership with learners, students, parents, and the wider South Australian community will build a world-leading public education system. One that is equitable and prioritises learning and wellbeing.

Together we will make our education system the best it can be.

When our children and young people thrive, so do our communities and our state.

About the Team:

The Attendance Directorate within the Support & Inclusion Division aims to improve participation, engagement and learning achievement for all children and students. Support and Inclusion work prioritises children and students with functional needs, Aboriginal students and children in care. This includes improving attendance, particularly for these priority cohorts.

There are a range of inter-related factors that influence attendance rates. Some factors are school-related while others relate to individual and family contexts. Critically, the evidence suggests that early attendance and declining attendance habits from primary to secondary school can have a variety of impacts on a student’s academic achievements, social connections, wellbeing and longer-term life outcomes such as employment.

The Attendance Outreach team within the Support & Inclusion Division aims to improve participation, engagement and learning achievement for all children and students. Support and Inclusion work prioritises children and students with functional needs, Aboriginal students and children in care. This includes improving attendance, particularly for these priority cohorts.

The Attendance Outreach team will work with schools and preschools to provide support to assist them in meeting the needs of children with significant attendance concerns. The role requires the incumbent to participate in the development and implementation of a new service model that supports the provision of an outreach service to students who are persistently absent. These students and families often have multiple complexities impacting their school attendance. The role will provide leadership for an effective operational model relying on data and interdepartmental collaboration.

About the Role:

The Social Worker - Attendance Outreach (AO) is a member of an inter-disciplinary team and works with children and young people with truancy, attendance and engagement issues and their families. The Social Worker AO liaises with preschool and school staff, and parents to provide suitable advice, information, strategies and referrals to re-engage persistently absent students into school attendance.
