AddressMarrin Weejali provides culturally safe substance misuse and non-acute Mental Health counselling, referral and advocacy services to members of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community of western Sydney. We offer assessment and comprehensive care planning that includes evidence based intervention and therapy to help clients to meet their goals and address underlying issues, while also developing new skills to improve their quality of life. We also reach out into the community through our primary prevention activities to help more of our people live healthy, peaceful and fulfilling lives, and to reduce the likelihood of our people resorting to alcohol and illicit substances or experiencing a Mental Health condition. Partnerships with other like-minded service providers are central to how we go about supporting our clients’ needs.

Selection Criteria:- A minimum of a certificate IV or Diploma qualification in Mental Health, Alcohol & other Drugs or Counselling.
- Minimum 2 years of previous experience in providing support for individuals with alcohol and other Drug and co-existing Mental Health problems and other complex issues.
- A demonstrated knowledge of the Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander concept of social and emotional wellbeing including an understanding of Aboriginal & Torres trait Islander family structure and Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander culture and wisdom. This will include an understanding regarding the practical and emotional issues that may arise when working with Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander individuals with alcohol and other Drug and co-existing Mental Health problems and their families.
- Demonstrated ability to provide high quality, safe and connected care to Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander individuals in a person-centred and holistic manner that promotes self-determination and in a strength based approach.
- Knowledge of evidence based treatments, care coordination and support strategies.
- Demonstrated interpersonal, liaison and negotiation skills, including the ability to provide accurate, consistent, timely and appropriate service to clients.
- Ability to maintain client records, statistics
- Sound computer skills
- Demonstrable communication skills including report writing, case note writing
- Senior first aid certificate
- Current NSW driver's licence
The successful applicant will be responsible for:
- Conducting assessments including risk assessments of clients
- Providing counselling to clients on a one to one basis or in group sessions
- Referring clients to other services as appropriate
- Delivering education & awareness group therapy relating to substance misuse risk factors, relapse prevention, responsible use, and their management
- Delivering education & awareness group therapy relating to social and emotional wellbeing, including but not limited to DBT and domestic family violence
- Working collaboratively with clients to identify their needs, set goals and develop client care plans
- Work in partnership with Community Health staff, hospital staff, GPs and specialists, and with other health and human services agencies and NGOs, to ensure coordinated client care, maintain client liaison, referral and follow up procedure which confirms delivery of client care.
