Focus Minerals (FML) is a leading Australian gold explorer with tenure in Coolgardie and Laverton, two exciting gold regions in WA, and is the largest landholder in the Coolgardie goldfields with over 450sq km of tenements. Resumption of operations commenced in 2023 and FML has now commenced the planning and execution phase of bringing its Bonnie Vale underground operation online, located 10km north of its 1.2 Mtpa Three Mile Hill processing plant.
About the Role
The Alternate Underground Manager is a Statutory role working back-to-back with the Underground Manager. This is a leadership role with a focus on providing leadership and management of FML underground mining projects to deliver the company’s strategy for underground development, with high calibre people, excellent support systems and culture.
The role requires a person with a drive to add value by leading the underground mining teams to ensure delivery of the business plan, and continuous improvements in safety, productivity, quality, and cost.
This permanent, full-time role is based in Coolgardie WA, an iconic mining town, with a new accommodation village that has been built within the Coolgardie township. The FIFO roster is primarily an 8/6 dayshift rotation from Perth or residential Kalgoorlie/Coolgardie region.
Responsibilities
- Initial focus will be on the optimisation, development and delivery of the Bonnie Vale underground mine project
- Development of, and management support for, the underground mining team which includes contractors to meet budget objectives
- Driving positive behaviours and adherence to FML’s WHS and environment standards, WHS legislation and other applicable mining legislation and standards – audit, review performance and trends, assess compliance and drive improvement
- Coaching and mentoring of mining technical staff providing leadership, technical assistance and advice
- Identification of opportunities which contribute towards FML’s strategic and operational goals
- Control of underground mining processes, driving efficiency where opportunity exists
- Ensuring compliance with FML’s Human Resources policy and procedures
- Undertake effective daily, weekly, monthly and long-term planning and forecasting for production physicals, operational and capital expenditure of the underground mining department to ensure compliance with company expectations
Qualifications and Experience
- Tertiary Qualification in Mining Engineering
- First Class Mine Managers’ Certificate of Competency
- Knowledge of the new WHS (2020) Act, WHS (Mining) Regulations 2022 and DGSA 2004 (Explosives) and other relevant mining legislation
- A minimum of 10+ years’ experience in an operational environment with a focus on small to medium scale projects with five (5) years plus experience in gold mining operations
- Prior experience in leading and developing operations and technical teams including managing mining contractors
- Competency in the use of mine planning software (preferably Deswik)
- Ability to implement strategy and plan autonomously and flexibly
