INFORMATION FOR APPLICANTSGreater Shepparton City Council, situated in the heart of the Goulburn Valley, is the fourth largest provincial centre in Victoria and has a well-developed economy due to its strong agricultural and irrigation base, with major industries related to food processing, manufacturing and transport. The Goulburn Valley is often referred to as 'The Food Bowl of Australia' as around 25% of the total value of Victoria's agricultural production is generated in this area.

Greater Shepparton has a population of approximately 65,000, and an expenditure budget in excess of $118 million. The population is culturally diverse with 9.9% of residents being born overseas. The area has excellent education, recreation, cultural, social and health facilities and tourism is a developing focus for the region.

Animal Ranger Trainee 

Salary: $63,961.56 per annumClosing: Friday 29 March 2024 Full time - Temporary (18 Months)

An exciting opportunity is available for a highly motivated individual who has an interest in animal management and welfare to join Council’s committed and passionate Animal Management team.

We are looking for a person who has:

  • Successfully completed Year 12 (or equivalent) and has a current Victorian Driver licence.
  • A strong passion for caring for and working with all domestic animals.
  • An interest in promoting animal welfare and responsible pet ownership through community engagement.
  • Good interpersonal and written skills with the ability to provide a high level of customer service and facilitate effective outcomes.
  • Ability to exhibit positive behaviours by showing initiative and take responsibility for own actions.
  • Ability to learn, retain detailed information and apply standard procedures, practices and policies regarding legislation, occupational health and safety, conflict resolution and animal handling techniques.
  • The ability to work independently and as a part of a team.
  • The ability to participate in difficult, distressing or complex investigations such as animal cruelty, aggressive animals or dog attacks.
  • The ability to commit to successfully completing Certificate IV in Animal Regulation and Management within the contract period.

Things you’ll do:

  • Embrace Councils animal management values to deliver quality customer service through innovation and collaboration.
  • Participate in and successfully undertake team training activities and Certificate IV in Animal Regulation and Management through an external training provider during the traineeship period.
  • Develop a sound understanding and application of relevant legislation, authorisation and delegation.
  • Develop skills and investigative techniques required to be a Council Animal Ranger including community education and engagement, law enforcement, occupational health and safety, animal handling and animal shelter operations.
  • Assist Animal Rangers and Coordinator in undertaking inspections, patrols, door knocking, legal investigations and enforcement activities in accordance with relevant legislation, Council policies, procedures and guidelines.
