Brisbane City Council is busy delivering Australia's most modern public and active transport, including the Brisbane Metro. We operate one of the largest bus fleets in Australia, along with the iconic CityCat and Cross River ferry network. 

Our Branch

Transport for Brisbane operates from seven bus depots across the greater Brisbane metropolitan area Council’s bus depots ensure efficient operation of its bus fleet and include on-site maintenance, cleaning and refuelling, scheduling, and rostering and driver amenities. 

Each depot has a Garage Services Team that provides mechanical and non-mechanical bus maintenance to ensure the bus fleet is maintained to a high standard to meet public safety requirements and keep buses on the road. Willawong bus garage, which opened in 2009 is currently looking for an Apprentice Heavy Vehicle Mechanic to join their team. Willawong is approximately 30 minutes from Brisbane CBD.

The Role

This is your chance to develop a long-term career in the automotive industry by gaining a nationally recognised qualification, Certificate III Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical Technology with Brisbane City Council. 

A heavy vehicle mechanic (HVM) apprentice at Willawong is supported with on-the-job training to assist with bus fleet maintenance. HVM apprentices carry out heavy manual work in garages based at bus depots and undertake supervised operation and reliability services, repair and maintenance, and replacement of components. 

The salaries including penalty rates are competitive and you will be required to work a nine-day fortnight. Uniforms an all tools will be provided and 100% of training costs are paid for by Council and you will be assigned a dedicated apprentice and mentor.  

What more can you expect? You could participate in the annual Lord Mayor’s Apprentice of the Year awards and opportunities to work at other bus depot garages to further enhance your learning. 

This is what your working day will look like: 

·      inspecting and carrying out servicing operations

·      diagnosing problems identified by bus operators and rectifying faults

·      over-hauling mechanical parts of buses (engine, transmission & suspension systems)

·      detecting mechanical and electrical faults by including fuel systems, speed control, cylinder compression, engine condition, braking efficiency, wheel balance and alignment.

You don’t need prior experience in the automotive industry, but we want to hear from you if you:

·      have a keen interest in vehicles, mechanics, and the motor industry

·      are a problem solver with technical aptitude and great attention to detail

·      can follow safe working practices in a workshop

·      have a year 10 aptitude to read and write with a basic understanding of maths

·      can combine theory-based training with practical learning

·      are a good communicator who can follow instructions, listen, question and learn

·      are engaged and committed to working positively within a team

·      take pride and ownership of your work outcomes

·      have a current driver’s licence and ability to gain a HR licence.
