Job description

Who we are
The Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) is part of the Commonwealth Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water. As primary agency for Australia's Antarctic Program (AAP), the AAD is responsible for achieving the Australian Government's Antarctic goals to:
  • Maintain the Antarctic Treaty System and enhance Australia's influence within it.
  • Protect the Antarctic environment.
  • Understand the role of Antarctica in the global climate system.
  • Undertake scientific work of practical, economic and national significance.

The AAD also has responsibility for administering the Australian Antarctic Territory and the Territory of Heard Island and McDonald Islands.
The People and Culture Branch supports our people and our culture. It plays a key role in coordinating the division's cultural change program in response to Leigh Russell's 2023 independent review of our workplace culture. Through our cultural change program, we are changing the way we do things to make our workplaces safe and inclusive for everyone. The branch has a strong focus on supporting expeditioners (people who spend time working in Antarctica and the sub-Antarctic) including, expeditioner recruitment, onboarding, training, performance management, medical and organisational psychological services and offboarding. The branch also provides critical divisional services across media and communication, risk and business continuity. The AAD is committed to positive culture that values diversity, equity, and inclusion. We are adapting to be ready for our future, to deliver our new capabilities, and to be a great place to work.
We are looking to fill multiple roles in two sections within the AAD People and Culture Branch; Expeditioner Services (recruitment) and Expeditioner Capability and Training. The process will establish a merit pool that may be drawn upon for future vacancies.

The position vacancies lie in the recruitment stream, related to coordination of recruitment and assessment processes, travel and accommodation, onboarding and offboarding, performance management, internal and external stakeholder liaison, and the safe return of our expeditioners to Australia.
Expeditioner Capability and Training Section - Program Officer
The Expeditioner Capability and Training Section's key focus is on ensuring expeditioners are trained before they spend time working in Antarctica and the sub-Antarctic. This includes delivering a complex and multi-disciplinary training program, informed by season planning and reflecting the various technical, community-based and government elements that inform a holistic capability framework for the Australian Antarctic Program. The Expeditioner Capability and Training Section liaises with diverse stakeholder groups, including external training providers, registered training organisations and subject matter experts.
