Our team

The National Location Information Branch (NLI) of Geoscience Australia is leading provision of advice to government and industry stakeholders on location related matters, platforms for cross-jurisdictional data integration, and delivery of national scale geographic datasets. The NLI Branch also leads implementation of the Digital Atlas of Australia, a component of the Australian Government data initiatives to create a front door to Australian Government data and support Australia in becoming a world-leading digital economy and society by 2030. 

The role

The Digital Atlas of Australia is an interactive, secure, and easy-to-use online platform that brings together a range of valuable, trusted national datasets. A person in this role will apply professional experience and provide technical leadership in digital cartography and online mapping and information products delivery, in support of the Digital Atlas. This would require working with near real-time, and historical data on Australia’s geography, population, the economy, employment, infrastructure, health, land and the environment. A person in this role will be producing information products that have high visibility and broad uptake by users of the Digital Atlas. The objective is to give business, the public and government the power to make more informed data-driven decisions to keep our country safe, to promote the wellbeing of our people and environment, and make new business and personal ventures possible. 

A person in this role will need to be a highly motivated professional, who can anticipate and respond to evolving requirements, work confidently as member of a larger team and independently; and to work closely with other teams across Geoscience Australia and its Digital Atlas partners to ensure deliverables are of high standard, delivered on time, and meet expectations of our clients.

In this role you will:

  • apply your expertise and technical knowledge in cartography to producing key mapping information products that meet needs of broad range of users
  • work with independence for the achievement of own and broader work area outcomes, monitor progress and follow through to deliver quality outcomes
  • provide accurate and specialised advice including anticipating problems and contributing to their resolution
  • propose and facilitate innovation and contribute to business improvement strategies and to change in workplace practices
  • monitor changes in the broader work environment that may impact on work objectives
  • make decisions, with direction from more senior staff, on tasks/assignments with considerable complexity and sensitivity
  • successfully manage competing priorities in line with the teams goals and objectives
  • gather and investigate information from diverse sources and explore new ideas and different viewpoints
  • communicate effectively and contribute to the teams positive, inclusive and compassionate culture
  • Contribute to the development of team objectives for short term tasks and strategic planning for longer-term initiatives
  • develop and manage relationships with internal and external stakeholders to achieve work area and agency goals; anticipate and respond to stakeholder needs and expectations
  • understand, support and promote the organisation's vision, mission, and business objectives
  • represent the agency by promoting its interests at community and cross-agency levels

To be successful in the role you will:

  • demonstrate an awareness of the implications of issues for own work and work area
  • take personal responsibility for accurate completion of work within timeframes and quality requirements; take the initiative to progress work when required
  • think laterally to identify and implement improved work practices and promote these practices across the broader team
  • monitor projects against plans; manage priorities and make adjustments to milestones as required; follow up to ensure that issues are completed
  • build and sustain positive relationships with team members, stakeholders and clients and proactively offer assistance to ensure a mutually beneficial outcome
  • work collaboratively and operate as an effective member of the team
  • consult internal experts; tap into their technical and professional knowledge and experience to improve work outcomes for the business area
  • have relevant experience in team leadership, work planning and task prioritisation
  • confidently present messages clearly and succinctly, focussing on key points and using appropriate language
  • operate in a professional manner when representing the organisation
  • make time for people despite competing priorities; provide guidance and offer full support when required
  • adhere to the APS Values and Code of Conduct and consistently behave in an honest, ethical and professional way

Required skills, knowledge, experience and/or qualifications

  • significant experience and knowledge of contemporary cartographic design principles applicable to topographic, thematic and reference mapping, typography, and data generation
  • proficiency in the use of Esri suite of desktop, including ArcPRO and ArcGIS Online, cloud software, relevant hardware, and platforms necessary for cartographic, graphic and web production
  • sound knowledge and understanding of GIS (geographic information systems) principles, data and mapping workflows. 
  • experience with ArcPy and Arcade languages
  • experience in implementing data processing and/or automation workflows
  • experience in working with stakeholders from various backgrounds and levels of seniority
  • effective communication skills, both written and oral
  • a formal qualification in geospatial science is desirable
