Our team

Working in the National Planning and International Relations Section (NPIR) within the Space Division provides an opportunity to help solve Australia’s biggest challenges. Be part of the mission to apply world-class Earth observations (EO) from space to make a difference across the environment, emergency management and agriculture sectors. NPIR works with colleagues and stakeholders across the globe to strengthen Australia’s strategic relationships.

Each day is unique, engaging with international space agencies, partner countries and national counterparts to identify opportunities to maximise impact across the science-policy nexus. Working at the forefront of thinking about how investments in new science can unlock unparralled opportunities to embed satellite imagery and data into decisions, the team works to provide solutions towards a sustainable Australian environment, resilient society and stronger economy for current and future generations.

The role

The Senior Project Officer is responsible to coordinate and support strategic work across NPIR’s national and international engagement areas, exercising both initiative and judgment to provide relevant technical and policy advice in relation to solving complex problems.

In this role you will:

  • Represent Geoscience Australia by promoting its interests at national and international committees and forums, including managing progress of workplans and providing secretariat services as required.
  • Develop and manage relationships with key national and international stakeholders, including anticipating and responding to stakeholder needs and expectations across the Asia-Pacific region.
  • Undertake policy research, including obtaining and distilling technical EO advice to identify opportunities to support the delivery of key Australian Government policy agendas.
  • Manage the data collection, analysis and reporting process for the Australia EO-related programs database, including engaging with stakeholders across the Australian and state and territory governments.
  • Provide support to Australian Government representatives participating in international and domestic technical EO forums, including managing logistical arrangements for attendance.
  • Prepare draft reports, briefing papers, speeches and Ministerial correspondence.
  • Support the management of projects and undertake procurement and contract management activities including financial administration.

To be successful in the role you will:

  • Develop and manage relationships with national and international stakeholders, engaging and collaborating to achieve successful outcomes and facilitate cooperation.
  • Perform research and analysis to inform decision making that involves complex or sensitive issues and strategic planning.
  • Have well-developed organisation skills, strong task prioritisation skills, and ability to demonstrate initiative.
  • Apply your experience and knowledge to successfully deliver projects and stakeholder support in timely and reliable manner.
  • Have the ability to work both independently with limited supervision, as well as contribute positively working as part of a team.
  • Demonstrate technical understanding, or the ability to acquire an understanding, of EO, their value, application and potential for impact.
  • Demonstrate understanding of, and commitment to, the Australian Public Service Values and fostering an inclusive workplace culture within Geoscience Australia.

Required skills, knowledge, experience and/or qualifications

  • Experience working with government to support policy and program design and delivery.
  • Knowledge of Earth Science and/or project management is highly desirable.
  • Excellent written communication skills, with the ability to produce work requiring little or no revision before finalisation.
  • Well-developed oral communication skills, including the ability to listen and adapt to various audiences, and persuasively convey ideas and concepts in a simple, understandable manner.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to collaborate effectively and form positive, productive working relationships with team members and stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a dynamic environment, prioritise multiple activities, work efficiently, and deliver against short timeframes.
