ARCHAEOLOGIST – FULL TIME 12 MONTH MAXIMUM TERM CONTRACT

South Australian Native Title Services (SANTS) is the Native Title Service Provider for South Australia delivering services to South Australia’s traditional owners. Our primary role is to ensure we protect native title rights and interests and achieve sustainable Aboriginal Nations through providing native title services to clients to realise their economic, social and cultural aspirations.

We are now seeking an Archaeologist to work in our Research Team reporting to the Research Manager. Archaeologist working within the Research Team is responsible for research and the provision of archaeological advice to SANTS and our clients.  This may also include research support to other staff within SANTS, or it may, at times, include provision of GIS services.  The Archaeologist will also work co-operatively with the Capacity Development and Legal Support team.

To be successful in this role you will have: 

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications.
  • 3-5 years’ experience minimal
  • Experience working with indigenous organisations (desirable).
  • Skills in the conduct of high-level cultural heritage fieldwork and reporting, research, analysis and interpretation of findings
  • Organisational and time management skills, with demonstrated ability to work autonomously, under pressure, and within stringent timeframes.
  • Highly developed communication skills including the ability to provide clear, concise and comprehensive advice both verbally and in writing – report writing of a high standard is required. 
  • Advanced interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain relationships with a broad range of people, and to anticipate needs and act upon them proactively.
  • Intermediate skills with Microsoft Office.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Indigenous Australian societies and cultures, and the issues affecting these cultures in Australian society.
  • Working knowledge of and commitment to the principles and practices of Equal Employment Opportunity and Workplace Health and Safety.
  • SA Drivers License, preferably able to drive manual. 
  • Provide high level advice, support and assistance in the areas of research, archaeology, cultural heritage and GIS services to SANTS and our clients.
  • Assist with research in the post-determination field.
  • Provide expert advice and support as required on matters relating to the prosecution of native title and compensation applications pursuant to the Native Title Act (as amended).
  • Ensure the proper and ethical storage of research information.
  • Utilisation of SANTS records management system (including use of CONTENT MANAGER).

The position is a 12-month maximum term full time contract, based in the Adelaide CBD but will require intra and interstate travel.
