Our section is a part of ASD’s Mission Data Division, Data Foundations Branch. We are responsible for the delivery of end-user products and services for intelligence analysts to achieve mission objectives. Every day provides us with an opportunity to use our skills and experience to solve complex problems and to transform the way that ASD does business. You’ll work in an integrated team of Business Analysts and User Experience professionals that place the user perspective at the center of our work. ASD EL1 User Experience Designer
As an EL1, you will be responsible for the guidance and work distribution of other UX designers. You will be the lead UX designer within projects, providing mentorship and supervising of junior designers. An EL1 to have at least 5 years’ experience as a Senior Designer.
Key Duties
- Leads design team by managing and prioritising UX design work packages.
- Manages the UX design team’s purpose and direction.
- Manages the growth of UX design capabilities within the division.
- Provides sign off on design components being produced.
- Sets design standards for work packages.
- Guides, mentors and develops UX design team members professionalisation

About our Team
Mission Data (MD) Division within the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) is responsible for providing the foundational data capabilities to support all of ASD’s functions. We do this via the provision of data platforms and services, management of ASD’s mission data, and providing complex analytic development and support, including Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning capabilities. All roles within MD require extensive knowledge of and compliance with legislative frameworks, government decision-making and Defence’s mission and policies requirements.
Our Ideal Candidate
As a UX Designer, your role will be to ensure that what we are delivery allows for a positive experience when users interact. This involves working with the Business Analysts (BA) and User Researcher (UR) to understand user’s needs, behaviors and wants. You will need to demonstrate the ability to identify problem areas for improvements in designs. You will need to demonstrate the ability of solving complex problems. You will also need to have a sound understanding of human centered design practices.
Each role will need to demonstrate the ability to:
- Create concepts based on research and requirements gathered from the BA and UR.
- Define the right interaction model.
- Develop wireframes and prototypes that meet user needs.
- Conduct design workshops to understand design requirements with users.
- Conduct design workshops to gather feedback on designs from users and stakeholders
- Find creative ways to solve problems.
- Conduct usability and feasibility assessments against designs created.
- Communicate designs and prototypes with developers, users and seniors.
