Job description

Summary:

The Assistant Accountant primary objective is to assist the Financial Controller and Financial Accountant in managing the finances of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference (the Conference). The Assistant Accountant is responsible for assisting in the financial bookkeeping of the Conference that will involve processing invoices, recording payments, tracking expenses, assisting with payroll, producing reports and budgeting.

The role

  • General duties associated with accounts including accurate and timely processing of accounts receivable and accounts payable, follow up of overdue payments, banking and other administrative duties. In undertaking these duties consideration must be made to the Delegations Register to ensure that stakeholder approval of transactions is within their delegated limit.
  • Processing of credit cards and EFTPOS payments including credit card reconciliations.
  • Processing reimbursements for internal and external stakeholders in a timely fashion and answering related queries as required.
  • Carrying out daily bank reconciliations for the Conference and its controlled entities (where relevant), balance sheet reconciliations, general ledger/accounts reconciliations and petty cash reconciliations.
  • Assisting with processing of fortnightly payroll within defined time constraints, taking account of appointments, terminations and leaves of absence.
  • Analysing financial information and generating reports as required using MYOB, Calxa, Excel including assisting with building the annual budgeting model.
  • Writing and updating Standard Operating Procedures and Conference policies as requested, setting up finance workshops with secretariats and cost centre managers and undertaking finance presentations as required.
  • Assisting in reviewing suppliers, customers, accounts and cost centres to ensure they should remain active and required and removing redundant items when no longer required.
  • Invoicing and billing for associated customer accounts including the Catholic Book Shop (ECWID), sponsorship and donations (Salesforce), levies on dioceses, invoices associated with fees for the Australian Catholic Migrant and Refugee Office, Australian Catholic Redress Limited and CDPF limited.
  • Supporting the Finance team with month end processes, ad-hoc reports and ATO compliance reporting (including BAS/IAS and FBT returns).
  • Carrying out other general duties as required including liaising with stakeholders, answering stakeholder queries, preparing and distributing both management accounting and finance reports to stakeholders and general filing and records management.

About you

  • A tertiary qualification in accounting, business or a related discipline required. A minimum of 3 years' experience in a general finance function is desirable.
  • Solid knowledge and skills in the use of contemporary accounting applications.
  • Demonstrated ability in the use of Excel in financial analysis and reporting.
  • Strong attention to detail and numerical accuracy and being proactive in nature.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a small team.
  • An understanding of and willingness to work within the mission and identity of the Catholic Church.
