The AEC maintains an impartial and independent electoral system for eligible voters through active electoral roll management, efficient delivery of polling services and targeted education and public awareness programs.
This role is expected to manage the agency's financial statements and audit process, support the establishment and maintenance of processes and framework across financial accounting and reporting practices and assist in the day to day matters relating to financial accounting.
The role is responsible for undertaking very complex and/or sensitive work, under broad direction, utilising expertise across a range of activities relating to the support of Financial Reporting and financial statement audits.
Key position responsibilities
- Manage the effective planning and coordination of the financial statements audit process.
- Establish and maintain internal controls to support Financial Reporting and compliance requirements.
- Provide advice on accounting standards and other compliance requirements (across taxation and other financial legislation).
- Support activities of the finance function, including month end processes, accurate monthly financial reports, financial statements and asset management.
- Ensure completion of the monthly financial information and actively manage the completion of year-end financial statements.
- Provide support across the agency to improve their financial management capabilities (through business partnering approaches and improving training and procedural documentation); and provide strategic advice on agency's financial related matters.
- Perform additional duties or assume responsibility of functions as directed from time to time.
- The volume of requests for advice and matters, along with the urgency to resolve matters, will increase significantly prior to and during both electoral events.
- Support programme and project areas where required.

Mandatory
- CA or CPA qualified with a minimum three years' experience in a Financial Reporting/financial statement audit role.
- Demonstrated knowledge of public sector financial management and budgeting frameworks and APS Employment Frameworks.
- Demonstrated technical knowledge and experience in Commonwealth Financial Frameworks and compliance.
- Demonstrated understanding of, and commitment to, providing client focussed services.
- Sound knowledge and experience in successfully managing and delivering results within time restraints and with competing priorities.
- Proven ability to communicate with influence, negotiate outcomes and manage complex stakeholder relationships, including across a geographically dispersed network.
- Proven conceptual and analytical abilities with sound knowledge of change management practices and techniques to enable innovation.
- Demonstrated personal drive and integrity whilst achieving results within legislative and budget parameters.
- Experience in the use of TechOne.
- Knowledge of, or ability to, quickly gain knowledge of Australian electoral law and practice.
