GM Executive & International | International | Asia 

International Division advances Home Affairs' priorities through strategic international engagement, advice, coordination and delivery. We coordinate international policy engagement, provide international expertise, navigate risks and international sensitivities, and identify opportunities for increased engagement. This includes supporting cross-portfolio international engagement by Ministers and the Senior Leadership Team, and coordinating information on and responses to international crises. We also manage the International Capacity Building Program to improve the migration, identity, immigration intelligence and border management capabilities of partner governments.

Our ideal candidate

Assistant Director positions within International Division have broad responsibilities in strategic, engagement, advice, coordination and delivery to influence and advance Home Affairs' priorities with domestic, multilateral and regional stakeholders. International Division is looking for flexible, resilient and high performing staff with excellent strategic thinking, collaboration and communication skills who can engage effectively with whole-of government and international partners to foster collaboration and deliver tangible outcomes. The successful candidates will be self-motivated and well-informed on international issues, both in their region and globally where relevant, enabling them to advance Australia's national interests on the international stage.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Contribute to the delivery of Home Affairs' strategic interests globally through effective management of bilateral engagement on complex portfolio priorities, including through production of high-quality policy products. Identify opportunities and report on emerging issues, and recommend and implement management strategies, informed by stakeholder engagement and professional expertise
  • Apply strong written communication skills to deliver comprehensive and robust briefing to support executive and Ministerial engagement on complex and sensitive issues
  • Build and maintain positive and influential relationships across the portfolio and government, and with representatives from foreign governments, international organisations, industry, NGOs and academia, to advance Australia's interests and Home Affairs' priorities
  • Work closely with Posts to identify, deliver and manage capacity building projects in relevant regions
  • Contribute to the leadership of International Division, and the Department, including through effective management of a small team.

Additional information

Overseas travel for may be required for some roles

A merit pool will be established to fill other EL1 vacancies in the Division as they arise

The leadership team in International Division models and leads positive workplace behaviour; as a key part of the leadership team, Assistant Directors are expected to lead and contribute to a safe, respectful and inclusive work environment.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the position you must be an Australian Citizen.

The successful candidate will be required to obtain and maintain a Negative Vetting Level 1 (AGSVA) security clearance and an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC).

The Department of Home Affairs offers an attractive remuneration package, including salary, superannuation benefits and flexible working conditions appropriate to the level of the position.

The Department may provide relocation assistance to eligible APS employees required to relocate. The level of assistance will vary depending on the reason for relocating and your personal circumstances. For further information please enquire with the contact officer listed in the advertisement.
