Our client has a premium oyster farm located in New Zealand’s North Island. They are known for producing New Zealand's best oysters, which are enjoyed on high-end menus both domestically and internationally. Their state-of-the-art oyster farming technology ensures sustainable farming practices and minimal environmental impact.
With a culture that promotes opportunities for professional development and promotion, they are now seeking an Assistant Farm Manager to join their business and play a pivotal role in their well-established organisation.
The Role
Located in a picturesque location in the North Island of New Zealand, our client is seeking a motivated individual who is well versed in growing oysters, with a minimum of three years' experience in the aquaculture industry.
For key players who are willing to contribute to the business, this position offers the opportunity for career growth and advancement to a management position. The Assistant Farm Manager will act as the 2IC and provide support to the Farm Manager in overseeing the day-to-day activities of the farm and will also act as the lead in the Farm Manager's absence, allowing them to focus on other areas of the business.
Your responsibilities will include but not be limited to:
- Assisting the Farm Manager in planning and executing oyster farming operations
- Ensuring the well-being and growth of oysters using our innovative farming techniques
- Managing a team of 4-6 crew members, coordinating their tasks and ensuring productivity
- Maintaining high-quality standards for oyster processing and grading
- Communicating with the processing facility regarding oyster delivery and requirements
- Taking responsibility for maintaining a clean and organized farm environment
- Collaborating with the Farm Manager to implement strategies for business growth
About You
With a collaborative and hands on approach, you will have strong communication skills, and are able to liaise and interact well with the crew, Farm Manager, and processing facility. Possessing pro-active problem-solving skills, you are able to work under pressure, especially during high demand periods.
This role will be part of the farm leadership team, offering you the opportunity to influence and contribute to overall business strategy. You are reliable, respectful, hardworking, and possess a great attitude to help drive performance and profitability for the business. You also possess strong managerial skills with a deep understanding of oyster farming.
To be considered for the role, it is important that you can address the following:
- Minimum of three years' experience in the aquaculture industry, ideally in oyster farming
- Competent Skipper (valid licence required) or willingness to train as one
- Be a key member of the team with the ability to step into the Farm Manager role as required
- A degree in aquaculture or related fields is beneficial, but not essential
- Planning and coordination of maintenance-related tasks alongside the Farm Manager.
- Maintain knowledge and understanding of the demands of the tide/weather conditions
- Ensure work is planned in conjunction with the Farm Manager to prevent minimal downtime
- Passion for sustainable farming and commitment to maintaining environmental standards
- Full & Clean Driver’s License
- Ability to work weekends, if needed
