SALTAS – Assistant Smolt Manager
SALTAS is one of the first salmon hatcheries built in Tasmania and continues to lead the industry in advanced selective breeding and husbandry related research.
The flagship of our operations is our internationally recognised & award-winning Atlantic Salmon Selective Breeding Program, that supplies eggs, smolt and broodstock to our commercial customers through-out the industry. We have the privilege to operate in the pristine temperate rainforests of Tasmania and our two production sites hosts a combination of flow-through and recirculating aquaculture systems.
Our focus is to produce healthier, faster growing eggs and smolt for the Tasmanian salmon industry utilizing state of the art individual genomic analysis of our breeding families, broodstock and multipliers.
We are constantly developing and employing new technologies and improvements to our production systems towards improving our company’s economic and environmental sustainability and is expanding our team to keep up with demand.
ABOUT THE ROLE
We are looking for a motivated individual to provide essential support to the Fish Production Manager to ensure smooth operation and constant improvement of our smolt production. This is a pivotal role which is instrumental in coordinating activities, assisting in supervising essential tasks, and facilitating communication between workers, researchers and industry partners.
Key Responsibilities
- Production oversight: Assist the manager with all aspects of the smolt production process, including smolt plans, spawning season and working with our award-winning breeding program.
- Administrative Support: Assist with scheduling, reports, record keeping, and research in all smolt production areas.
- Production Coordination: Assist and supervise tasks and schedules, monitor progress against targets and communicate effectively between areas to ensure smooth production.
- Improvement: Work towards continuous improvement of smolt production strategies and practices with the goal of producing healthier and more resilient smolt. This includes being involved with improving/ building new RAS systems on site and upgrading the current site.
- Team Leadership: Be a competent leader and mentor to a team of staff, being able to provide guidance, training and support.
As we are in a relatively remote area about 1.5 hour’s drive from Hobart, shared accommodation may be provided during the week.

- Strong understanding of life support systems on the farm (oxygenation, monitoring etc)
- Good oral communication
- Great leadership skills
- Able to prioritise and manage your time efficiently
- Good problem-solving skills and attention to detail
Qualification:
- Bachelor’s degree in Aquaculture or equivalent qualification in relevant field.
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in the aquaculture industry
- Ideally experience in managing staff
