About Us

SafeWork NSW is the state’s workplace health and safety regulator. Our focus is to reduce work related fatalities, serious injuries and illnesses by securing compliance with work health and safety legislation and improving the safety culture in NSW workplaces.

The Metropolitan Construction Compliance division of SafeWork NSW works with all construction industry stakeholders to minimise harm and deliver on the on the NSW Building and Construction Work Health & Safety Blueprint. We also work with other key regulators such as the State Insurance Regulatory Authority, NSW Fair Trading, and the NSW Building Commission.

About the team

We are looking for an Assistant State Inspector to join our team within the Metropolitan Construction Compliance, Harm Prevention & Compliance Programs. SafeWork NSW

The team is responsible for delivering programs to build industry capability through collaborative stakeholder engagement, evidence, and risk-based Harm Prevention projects aimed at reducing fatalities, serious injuries and illness.

About the role

As a Metropolitan Construction Assistant State Inspector, you will work with NSW building and construction sector employers to assist them in creating and maintaining workplaces where their employees return home safely each day.  You will, amongst other things:

  • Work with industry, community and government agencies in the response to and prevention of workplace injury, illness and incidents within the building and construction sector.
  • Prevent harm by securing compliance with regulatory obligations on construction sites.
  • Utilise your research and analytical skills to identify, plan and lead the delivery of strategies to encourage best practice in safe construction methods.
  • Conduct and assist in investigations into causes of workplace incidents, injuries and fatalities and potential breaches of legislation where required.
  • Play a pivotal role in working with and building the capability of internal and external stakeholders and customers.
  • Contribute to the development of high-risk Harm Prevention projects and initiatives.
  • Utilise your leadership capabilities to build the capability of Inspectors and internal and external stakeholders and customers.
  • Work closely with other regulators including the NSW Building Commissioner, NSW Fair Trading and NSW State Insurance Regulatory Authority to ensure the safety of workers in the construction industry. 
  • Where necessary, be involved in court processes, including the preparation of court documents, attending court and participating in evidentiary processes.

About you

  • This opportunity would suit someone with the ability to take on a leadership role in a high functioning operational unit. You will support the activities of a multidisciplinary team responsible for the implementation of front-line services and programs supporting health, safety and return to work strategic direction in the dynamic NSW building and construction sector.

  • Ability to translate technical and complex information concisely for diverse audiences.
  • Ability to contribute to the development of guidance materials and policy.
  • Ability to anticipate, identify and address issues and potential problems and select the most effective solutions from a range of options.
  • Participate in and contribute to team/unit initiatives to resolve common issues or barriers to effectiveness.
  • Establish performance outcomes and measures for key project goals, and define monitoring, reporting and communication requirements.
  • Monitor the completion of project milestones against goals and initiate amendments where necessary.

To be successful, you will have:

  • One or more of the following:
    • Ten units of competency toward the Advanced Diploma of Government (Workplace Inspection), and/or
    • Equivalent relevant qualifications in a related work health and safety field and/or
    • 5+ years relevant professional industry experience in a relevant industry field.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in providing specialist advice and strategic leadership regarding compliance with relevant legislation to drive workplace safety.
  • Strong communication skills to proactively engage and influence key industry stakeholders, influence safety behaviour, undertake change management processes, and lead stakeholder engagements.
  • Stakeholder engagement capabilities to work collaboratively to translate strategic direction into operational goals and build a shared understanding of the link between these and core business outcomes.
  • Strong data analytical skills to identify current and emerging issues affecting the safety of workers within the construction industry and assist in designing Compliance Programs to prevent harm across the state.
  • A strong work ethic, resilience to manage complex investigations and have a key focus on customer expectations whilst promoting NSW Public Service values.
  • Demonstrated experience to plan and deliver strategies as they relate to safety and RTW in workplaces.
  • Demonstrated experience in coordinating programs or projects of work.
  • Solid knowledge and use of technology.
  • Strong data analytical skills to identify current and emerging issues affecting the safety of workers within the building and construction industry and assist in designing Compliance Programs to prevent harm across the state.

  • Work a 38-hour working week, including some weekends and participate in the After-Hours Emergency Response Service  
  • Receive an attractive salary package along with the required tools of the trade, including a vehicle with access to private use (currently at a cost of approximately $210 per fortnight)  
  • Be able to access flexible working conditions within operational requirements 

Essential requirements 

  • Ability to travel, work remotely and out of usual business hours
  • Hold a NSW ‘C’ class drivers' licence with a satisfactory safe driving record and a requirement to maintain the safe driving record throughout employment
  • Satisfactory criminal record check
  • Satisfactory medical assessment capacity regarding physical and psychological impacts of the inherent duties of the role
  • Undertake the 12-month New Inspector Training Program (NITP). This intensive program is delivered by our Registered Training Organisation and combines mandatory components of induction, class training, online learning, completion of set assessments and tasks, and extensive on-the-job field training with regular travel throughout NSW.
