Job description

  • Multiple permanent part-time positions available and multiple fixed term part-time until end of 2024.
  • Location Austin Hospital Emergency Services.

Austin Health is the major provider of tertiary health services, health professional education and research across three campuses in the north-east of Melbourne and state-wide.  We have a highly engaged, diverse and collaborative workforce that is unified by our purpose, which is to help people live healthy and fulfilled lives.

About Austin Emergency Services

The Emergency Department services approximately 90,000 patients per year, about 20% of whom are paediatric patients. The admission rate is of the order of 33%. The Emergency Department aims to assess, manage, and admit patients from a broad range of specialities, within the targets set by the Emergency Services Enhancement Programme of the Department of Human Services (DoH). This service will be delivered in a timely, compassionate, and appropriate manner, enhanced through teaching, research and the development of innovative technologies and processes.

The Emergency Department in the new hospital is a larger, state of the art facility which will assist our multidisciplinary team in its quality service delivery We are at the forefront of new and innovative models of Emergency care and workforce and are a contemporary leader in Emergency Medicine education, research, and quality.

The Emergency Department is currently separated into non COVID and SCOVID (suspected COVID) areas. The Short Stay Unit is a 20-bed unit, including paediatric, adult beds. It is closely associated with, and staffed by, the Emergency Department. Patients admitted to Short Stay usually have a rapidly reversible condition which either requires a short period of treatment or observation, where the likelihood of safe discharge can occur in a 24-48hr period. By this definition, patients with complex comorbidities, complex illness, chronic illness, or discharge hurdles (e.g., placement) may not be appropriate for the Austin Short Stay unit. We are leaders in the delivery of emergency services; satisfying the expectations of our patients, the Emergency Department staff and the Hospital, and meeting the changing needs of our community.
