Associate / Principal ITS Engineer

As part of the Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) team, you will work on cutting-edge projects that are redefining the transport industry, transitioning into the digital age of connected, autonomous and zero-emission vehicles. You will be designing the future of transport, embedding technology into major project infrastructure and being at the forefront of technological transformation shaping our cities.   WSP works with major engineering clients including the Department of Transport and Main Roads, Transport for NSW, Department of Transport and Planning (Vic), Main Roads WA, Transurban, major construction contractors and like-minded consultancies.    

WSP’s ITS team is industry leading and a unique opportunity exists for the right person to join our team. 

The role within the ITS team will provide design and consulting support across the following areas:

• Leading ITS discipline-specific major infrastructure project design activities across concept, business case, detailed design and construction phases   
• Verification and sign-off of design activities produced by engineering teams relating to ITS designs and engineering 
• Electrical engineering of lighting, signals and roadside infrastructure 
• Network and communication engineering 
• Use of computer-aided design tools such as AutoCAD, powerCAD, AGI32, Perfect Lite and others 
• Undertaking client relationship management and business development activities across existing and new client opportunities 
• Consulting services for clients across emerging technology areas such as connected and automated vehicles, smart city infrastructure, new mobility, data aggregation, analytics and systems 
• Management of projects including commercial elements such as budget, target margins, client interfaces and project risks 
• Working closely with the Planning and Mobility team for efficiencies, synergies and other opportunities where possible 
• Comply with all role-specific SHEQ obligations 
• Raising the profile of the ITS team and Planning and Mobility team 
• Actively participate in the Mentoring Program – both as a mentee and a mentor of junior team members 
• Motivate, encourage and inspire the development of a strong effective, efficient, ethical and professional team with a clear focus on the delivery of planned outcomes and the continual development of individual team member capabilities 
• Bidding of projects including commercial considerations such as margin, risk and accurate estimating 
• Desirable for knowledge of digital technologies such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), coding in Python or similar, and other emerging digital systems  

WSP’s ITS team has strong connections in the planning and mobility, transport, and digital engineering teams, and provides a broad range of possibilities for the right person, with an agile approach, a curious mind and the ability to adapt engineering principles to new engineering areas.   

You’re likely to have skills and experience in the following areas:

• Minimum of 5+ years experience within the signals, lighting and intelligent transport disciplines. 10+ desirable 
• Registration with the Board of Engineers QLD – RPEQ 
• Chartered Status with Engineers Australia is desirable 
• Experience leading design teams to deliver design packages  
• Working knowledge of engineering tools such as AutoCAD, and engineering design software.  
• Experience within a consulting environment with a proven record of leading quality engineering design and consulting services 
• Interest and/or experience in emerging digital fields such as AWS, scripting (python, C++) and other development tools.  
• Ability to work within a high-performing team, with a proven ability to prioritise team achievements and support others as required.  
• Ability to work well with others and be open-minded to new ideas and technologies 
• Able to produce quality written communication and support technical engineering work with communication skills matched appropriately to the desired audience.
