Rheinmetall NIOA Munitions Pty Ltd (RNM), a joint venture between Rheinmetall Waffe Munitions and NIOA Pty Ltd has established a state of the art forging and manufacturing facility in Maryborough QLD that produces artillery shell cases and other munitions-related products for supply to the defence industry.
What are we looking for?
As an Automation Technician, you will complete tasks as per the maintenance planning and scheduling system which will include installation of equipment throughout the facility and identifying and rectifying automation issues. You will identify corrective, reactive or improvement tasks then schedule and execute approved tasks. All work will be performed to Australian standards, legislation and company policies.

Key Accountabilities
- Utilise the company maintenance management system to determine, complete and record tasks while pro-actively supporting the maintenance team to maintain the work system.
- Conduct preventative and corrective maintenance tasks associated with automated process equipment including HMIs, PLCs, MCCs, Robotics and CNCs.
- Carry out installation, commissioning and fault-finding activities related to automation equipment in a manufacturing environment.
- Apply practical experience of automation and instrumentation components to ensure they are functioning correctly in the system as per design.
- Subject matter expert for automation processes to read and understand PLC programming software logic (Siemen’s and/or ABB desired) and Fanuc robot programming to resolve advanced automation issues.
- Train and support electrical trades on common automation fault finding and rectification processes including support with ongoing automation as directed by the Maintenance Supervisor to achieve and maintain a skilled, trained and engaged maintenance work team.
- Support the maintenance leadership team in a way that builds and maintains positive and safe working relationships aligned to the company mission and values.
- Applies excellent evaluation, analytical and problem-solving skills with strong attention to detail to resolve complex and challenging automation matters.
- Build and maintain strong relationships internally with RNM team members and externally with suppliers and international OEMs to ensure appropriate support and outcomes for RNM.
- Prioritise workload appropriately including the ability to meet deadlines to achieve company outcomes.
- Support the maintenance team to develop area work instructions and complete competency assessments in collaboration with the maintenance leads and planner.
- Reads and interprets wiring diagrams.
Qualifications, Knowledge & Experience
- A-Grade Electrical trade qualification or (dual trade) with electrical instrumentation & control.
- Industrial Electrical Automation experience in a manufacturing environment.
- Operating experience in applying lean manufacturing principles.
- Experience working under a maintenance management system for planning and scheduling maintenance tasks.
- Current Qld electrical working licence
- Working knowledge of electrical legislation and codes
- Average use of MS Office software
- Language skills – English – above average
- PLC programming and automation experience. Siemen’s and ABB equipment knowledge an advantage.
- Fanuc Robot operating and programming knowledge and experience.
- Mazak CNC electrical, automation & service knowledge.
- Experience in training others.

Additional Requirements
- Fit to work in munitions manufacturing environment.
- Physical requirements to regularly sit, stand, walk, use hands and reach with arms, talk and hear. Occasional requirement to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or manoeuvre awkward and/or heavy items using aids.
- Ability and resilience to work varied hours as required to achieve desired outcomes including coverage of teams on multiple shifts.
- Police/security checks and right to work in Australia.
