Based at Stirling Station (approx. 110km north east of the tourist town of Karumba in the Northern Queensland Gulf), the role would involve being responsible for maintaining the garden & grounds on the station, working 5-6 days a week (Monday to Saturday with most weekends/Sundays off). This is a junior position that would suit a young person travelling around Australia with a mature mind but loads of energy and good physical fitness.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Ensuring the station grounds are in a clean & presentable state at all times,
- Weekly mowing of around 5 acres of lawn with a near-new Toro zero turn ride on mower (training provided),
- Top up fertilising of lawn and raised vegetable garden beds,
- Slashing of the airstrip in the tractor (training provided),
- Checking of the automatic lawn irrigation system to ensure adequate lawn watering,
- Watering & mulching of pot plants, some young trees & vegetable garden beds,
- Looking after the house animals (dogs, chickens, some poddy calves & a couple of Jersey milking cows),
- Assisting the Station Chef and the Station Manager’s wife with some light kitchen & housekeeping duties.
Essential Criteria
- Must be a happy person and, most importantly, have a sense of humour!!!!
- Must be able to work on their own, unsupervised but in a supportive team environment,
- Must be energetic & hardworking,
- Must show initiative with the ability to finish tasks,
- Be creative & be able to “think outside the square” with problem solving,
- Must be able to stay in the job until mid-December (or until the wet season arrives),
- Must enjoy gardening and tending farm animals.
Preferable but not essential
- Rural background.
- Building, carpentry, painting or any mechanical skills.
- Knowledge of gardening or previous experience gardening.
- Own car.
