What is the Be You initiative?

headspace in collaboration with Beyond Blue deliver "Be You", the national mental health in education initiative. Be You supports educators from early learning services and schools to develop a positive, inclusive and resilient learning community where every child, young person, educator and family can achieve their best possible mental health.


About the role

Working under the direction of the NSW/ACT Manager, the Be You Consultant will work to support schools and education systems to implement and embed Be You within their allocated regions.

Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, you will support, coach and consult with school leaders and wellbeing teams to plan for a whole school approach to mental health. This will involve a focus on wellbeing promotion, prevention and early intervention, as well as providing support to schools following a suicide attempt or death, in line with best practice postvention approaches.

This is a full time, 12 month parental leave cover position and will be based in either the Canberra or Sydney office.


Who we're looking for

headspace Be You is seeking someone who is an experienced mental health or education professional with experience working in school settings leading mental health and wellbeing work in schools.

The Be You Consultant will be an individual who is;

  • Comprehensively knowledgeable of school environments
  • A strong communicator and has excellent stakeholder engagement skills
  • Engaging and motivated with demonstrated experience supporting individuals or communities in recovery/wellbeing post a critical incident or trauma
  • An experienced adult learning facilitator

You will be confident speaking with school leaders in a coaching/consultative role, as well as facilitating professional learning for adults online and in person.

A relevant tertiary qualification in education or public health promotion, community development and/or mental health, or relevant allied health discipline including psychology (clinical, counselling and educational), mental health nursing, occupational therapy, social work, or counselling.

This role at times will require intrastate and interstate travel.

  1. What is your experience in working with young people with mental health issues, including assessing risk? What is your understanding of how mental health issues impact on young people and their learning?
  2. What are some key characteristics in engaging schools in a mental health program, such as Be You? Drawing on your experience and/or observation, describe some of the challenges and opportunities you might face.
  3. What are the effects on a school if they have been impacted by a suicide and what actions might a school take to support people who are at risk?


To be eligible for this position you must

  • Have the right to live and work in Australia
  • Have a current Working with Children Check (WWCC) or equivalent, and/or pass all of the WWCC(s) required for this role (please note that for some roles, headspace requires WWCCs for other State/Territories in addition to your Home State)
  • Satisfactorily undergo a headspace Police Check
