Regional Operations | West | Operations West | Maritime Operations

The Australian Border Force (ABF) currently has nine District Offices based on the Western Australian coastline.

District Operations Officers use a wide and varying range of border enforcement skills to secure the border and enforce compliance with a range of legislation. They facilitate the movement of people and goods across the border, including boarding, searching and clearing vessels or aircraft as required. They also conduct inshore maritime and onshore remote area patrols to collect intelligence and support security in Australia’s maritime jurisdiction and the broader border continuum.

Officers working in this domain enhance and implement national border protection strategies by working cooperatively within the community and with partner agencies, working across a range of issues including customs, immigration, biosecurity, fisheries, police, industry, foreign affairs and trade, revenue collection, health and the environment. They engage with the local community, law enforcement partners and other government stakeholders and may participate in regional and national border enforcement operations.

The ABF is seeking inclusive leaders who are focused on building people capability that contributes to creating a proactive and productive workplace culture. The APS6 will lead and supervise a team, under the direction and support of an Inspector, to deliver a range of operational outcomes. You will manage your team’s goals, being adaptable to operational requirements, within complex, dynamic and sensitive environments.

Duties and responsibilities

As a Border Force Supervisor you will be accountable and responsible for supporting the delivery of a range of activities, which may include but are not limited to:

  • Conducting and coordinating routine border activities providing day-to-day/ routine departmental functions in respect to the movement of vessels, goods, crew and passengers across the border. 
  • Managing day-to-day operations, providing set directions, allocating work and managing resources to ensure business needs are met within changing priorities
  • Managing staff performance, including performance assessments, monitoring and reporting attendance, coaching, mentoring and on-the-job training
  • Providing detailed technical, professional and policy advice about complex problems
  • Making real time decisions, sometimes in situations without precedent, and perform intervention activities to address non-compliance or threats to the border
  • Liaising effectively with internal and external stakeholders, including other agencies
  • Promoting and ensuring the team members behave in accordance with WHS legislation, policies, directions and reasonable instructions in relation to work health and safety.

Additional information

Many positions within the Australian Border Force require the occupant to meet Border Force Officer essential qualifications. If successful for one of these positions, candidates are required to: 

  • Be 18 years or over at the time of applying
  • Wear a uniform
  • Meet medical, fitness, aptitude and psychometric requirements and standards relevant to the role
  • Be prepared to relocate to other ABF sites within your region if required
  • Be able to complete Operational Safety training, and be willing to carry and use personal defence equipment, including a firearm
  • You may also be required to acquire a Working with Children Check.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the position you must be an Australian Citizen.

The successful candidate will be required to obtain and maintain a Baseline Vetting (AGSVA) security clearance and an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC).
