About the Role

This is an exciting opportunity for a lawyer with a desire to work in the television and streaming. Working with the Business Affairs Lead Acquisitions, you will contribute to the rights strategy and effective contracting of acquired content across all ABC platforms, including ABC’s streaming platform, ABC iview. The ABC acquires a large volume of content from around the world and it’s important that our contracting both accurately captures the rights purchased and effectively manages the associated risks. You will have the opportunity to negotiate with a range of small and large distributors, and will also work closely with all divisions of the ABC to meet divisional priorities.

The role requires someone who enjoys working collaboratively with others, is self-motivated and has a passion for content. Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Building and maintaining relationships with key suppliers / distributors / stakeholders of commissioned and acquired content.
  • Drafting, negotiating and finalising acquisitions contracts as well as finalising project documentation in accordance with the ABC’s acquisitions process and ABC policies.
  • Contributing to contract management and the updating of precedents as required whilst working collaboratively with the Business Affairs team.
  • Where required, drafting, negotiating and finalising development agreements, talent agreements, licence agreements and other commissioned contracts plus finalising project documentation in accordance with the ABC’s commissioning process and ABC policies.

About You

You will have tertiary qualifications in law to enable you to draft, negotiate and finalise contracts and a strong background in intellectual property rights, commercial negotiation and contract management to ensure the ABC's content deals meet the rights and business needs of the ABC.

You will also have:

  • Advanced ability to draft and interpret licence agreements, with experience in an acquisitions licensing team preferred.
  • Advanced experience in contract management and an understanding of rights management, preferably within a legal, acquisition / distribution or Business Affairs department.
  • Demonstrated interest in the television, streaming and broadcasting industry.
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to foster internal and external stakeholder relationships.
