Role description:

As part of our Global Accelerating a Positive Planet Future strategy and our Places Australia Strategic Business Plan, we are evolving our Places Australia structure seeking a Business Area (BA) Operations and Global Excellence Centre (GEC) Director. This is pivotal to the Places business as you will ensure consistency in approach and operations as you will meet the Places Australia’s Business Areas performance targets and strategic objectives.

Reporting directly to the Places Australia Business Area Director and working closely with the Places Global Business Area (GBA) Operations Director, you will drive operational excellence into our projects and services, and champion the growth, use and performance efficiency of our GEC capability into the Australian business, in line with BA targets and strategy.

Role accountabilities:

As the BA Operations & GEC Director for Places Australia, you'll showcase your leadership skills by guiding your team effectively, motivating the business towards excellence and influencing broadly where improvements, efficiencies or change needs to be made. Your strong commercial acumen and deep industry knowledge of major building and civil engineering projects will inspire high-performance teams committed to meeting strategic objectives and taking pride in their work.

Your role will include: 

  • As the BA Director’s 2IC, enhances operational performance and implements operational and project performance related changes within the BA to support our business plan;
  • In close partnership with our Finance BP and Business Leaders, support Project Managers and Project Directors in proactively managing our project performance to create best-in-class project delivery and project outcomes;
  • Actively create a high performance environment for adoption of service best practice including standardisation, automation and digital tools for project delivery and reporting;
  • Collaborate closely with peers in Finance, Sales, and Operations to ensure a systematic and collaborative approach to MEPC+ (Margin Enhancement, Pricing, and Contracting) to achieving project excellence;
  • Coach and upskill our Project Manager and Project Director cohort capability;
  • Oversight and provide leadership over our projects on the Risk and Opportunity (R&O) register;
  • Actively work with BA leadership and all BA units to improve GEC collaboration and contribution with particular focus on units with low level participation as a change agent;
  • Drive delivery of sustainability targets and GEC implementation plan to exceed targets within BA units leaders and Project Managers, supporting with practical solutions to issues and removing barriers; and 
  • Actively track BA GEC KPIs against targets, including maximising GEC inclusion in pursuits and ensuring mandated GEC participation in projects is exceeded.

Qualifications & Experience:

You will come to us with: 

  • Preferred relevant and recognised bachelor or master’s tertiary degree. Qualifications in project and business management and leadership highly desirable.
  • Professional membership of relevant business/industry institutions;
  • At least 10+ years demonstrated experience in operational or business leadership role ideally having successfully established or operationalised new work methods, agile systems or processes to improve efficiency and performance;
  • Demonstrated experience as a commercial manager or project director on large complex projects (e.g. alliances, D&Cs, JV type projects);
  • Strong commercial and contractual experience in project delivery; and
  • Demonstrated experience in driving continuous improvement, innovation and operational efficiency.
