The key duties of the position include
The Role
The Pacific Patrol Boat Systems Program Office is seeking an experienced Business Manager to join our fast paced, dynamic Business Support team.
This role will suit a candidate looking to use their broad experience to build a high performing administrative team and develop systems to support the efficient delivery of compliant business practices within the integrated Defence environment. A can-do attitude will be vital to your success in this role, as the Business Support team are the go-to team to provide a broad range of workforce planning and support services to all functional areas of the program.
Within the Administration function, the role of APS 6 Business Manager is accountable under limited direction to perform and achieve complex strategic, procedural, operational, administrative and business support work within an integrated workforce comprising of civilian, military and contracted personnel. They are accountable to ensure they have knowledge of and compliance with legislative frameworks, government decision-making and Defence's mission and policy requirements.
The Business Manager will work independently with the opportunity for reasonable autonomy and accountability for the achievement of outcomes of their work. They will exercise both initiative and judgement in the interpretation of policy and in the application of practices and procedures. They will provide detailed administrative professional and policy advice in relation to complex work and contribute to strategic planning, program and project management and policy development.
The Business Manager is accountable to lead a small team, set work priorities and manage workflow and resources. They will build team capacity through coaching and feedback and will review and develop the quality of work undertaken by others within a work unit. They will exercise the associated people and financial responsibilities to achieve work unit outcomes.
The Business Manager will have a considerable level of stakeholder engagement and will liaise with stakeholders in relation to complex issues. They will be required to identify, anticipate and respond to stakeholders' needs and expectations to achieve work unit and Defence outcomes. This will include stakeholders who have English as a second language. They will also be accountable to contribute towards ongoing self-improvement and professional development.
About our Team
Since the 1960s, Australia has undertaken a range of capacity-building and engagement activities in the South Pacific and Southeast Asia under the Defence Cooperation Program. The centre piece of Australia's Defence engagement in the South Pacific is the Pacific Patrol Boat (PPB) Program, which involved the gifting of 22 Pacific Class Patrol Boats between 1987 - 1997 and the current PPB replacement program, which will provide 22 new Guardian Class Patrol Boats to participating Pacific Island Countries.
Recognising that the boats are sovereign assets of the participating nations, Australia is committed to providing a range of engineering, technical and logistics support services to ensure the ongoing operational capability of the Pacific Patrol Boat fleet, which is provisioned through the Pacific Patrol Boat Systems Program Office.

  • Excellent verbal/written communication skills;
  • Able to proactively engage with a range of key stakeholders to develop, document and improve processes, optimise outcomes and ensure the delivery of high-quality corporate governance outcomes;
  • Excellent time management skills and able to prioritise competing requirements in a highly dynamic environment;
  • Able to anticipate and react to the needs of a diverse workforce, providing timely and effective workforce, administrative and business support;
  • Ability to proactively problem solve through analysis of alternative courses of action and their implications; and
  • As an experienced workforce manager, you will be willing to share expertise, guide and mentor your team. You will ideally have experience in the provision of effective workforce management, including the management of recruitment activity, skills development, workforce strategic planning, talent identification and coaching.
