Derby District High School (DHS) is seeking a Canteen Supervisor to join their team.

About the Role

As Canteen Supervisor, the successful applicant will manage the operations of the canteen, taking student needs into consideration in providing a high level of customer service. The successful applicant will assist the Principal and Manager Corporate Services in the development of an Operational Plan.

The successful applicant will plan, monitor, and review all food delivery, preparation and serving processes using relevant food safety principles and implement improvements as required. As the Canteen Supervisor, you will provide a safe working environment, and create an environment that supports a positive and innovative organisational culture. Working with key staff members at Derby DHS, you will ideally be able to provide students with a healthy, well-balanced canteen menu and service whilst ensuring the financial viability of the canteen.

The successful applicant will ideally possess strong time management skills, the ability to work under pressure, and experience in cash handling, food preparation and hygiene within the Western Australian Schools Canteen Association Traffic Light System. You should have experience in stock control, ordering and logistics. You should also have the ability to build positive relationships and liaise with staff, students, community members, and suppliers in a positive, welcoming manner.

The school canteen is open during school terms, and a period of unpaid stand down applies during school vacations.  Accrued days off and annual leave (including additional purchased leave) may also be paid during school vacations. 

Our School

Derby DHS is located in Derby which is situated at the southern end of King Sound in the Kimberley region of Western Australian. Derby is 220 km east of Broome by road and is 2463 km north of Perth. It was the first town settled in the Kimberley. Derby is well supported with a range of government infrastructures. Its location near the King Sound and a number of rivers provides for many boating and fishing recreational activities - but not swimming!

This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position. 

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):

  • Knowledge of food hygiene practices and relevant Occupational Safety and Health Regulations.
  • Skills and experience in the management of a school/college canteen, commercial or similar service environment.
  • Skills and experience in coordinating and supervising staff.
  • Well-developed organisational skills and the ability to plan and deliver a high standard of food delivery practice.
  • Well-developed written and oral communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively interact with internal and external clients.

Eligibility and training requirements

Employees will be required to:

  • provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
  • consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit prior to commencement of employment;
  • obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check;
  • complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
  • complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment and every three years thereafter;
  • complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement;
  • complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy.

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
