Canberra Health Services (CHS) is focussed on the delivery of high quality, effective, person-centred care. It provides acute, sub-acute, primary and community‐based health services, to the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) and surrounding regions. More information can be found on the

The Canberra Hospital is a tertiary referral and teaching hospital within the ACT. The Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery Service is part of the Division of Surgery, which comprises all the major surgical subspecialties most with accredited training programs.

The Cardiothoracic Surgery Service is comprised of a dedicated team of surgeons, anaesthetists, allied health professionals, nursing staff, and administrative staff. Surgeons working in this service perform both cardiac and thoracic surgery. This team works in close collaboration with cardiologists, cardiac rehabilitation teams and medical oncologists. The team provide high quality care to patients across all phases of the patient journey from outpatient appointments, surgery, the post-operative inpatient recovery phase, and the post-operative rehabilitation phase. The Cardiothoracic Surgery Service is supported by unaccredited registrars and junior medical officers.

CHS Cardiothoracic Surgery Service contributes to the Australian and New Zealand Society of Cardiac Surgery and Thoracic Surgeons’ Cardiac Surgery Database Program.

Duties:

1.    Provide competent and efficient clinical management of patients of Canberra Health Services under the supervision and direction of Consultant Medical Practitioner. The clinical management includes acute admissions, in-patient care including daily ward rounds, outpatient clinics, inter -disciplinary consults and clinical handover.

2.    Participate in the supervision, training and professional development of junior medical staff and participate in undergraduate & postgraduate teaching as directed by Clinical Director of Surgery/Unit Director. Maintain adequate and legible medical records and ensure that the clinical team completes discharge summaries in a timely manner.

3.    Demonstrate progress in training in the specialty including participation in the relevant teaching program and activities, timely completion of assessments and involvement in research.

4.    Participate in the after-hours on-call / recall roster.

5.    Contribute to the clinical governance of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Service by undertaking clinical audit, morbidity and mortality review and practicing evidence-based medicine.

6.    Participate in research activities and changes that improve quality and safety of patient care, including maintenance of the Cardiothoracic Surgery database.

7.    Comply with the policies and requirements of the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency and the policies of Canberra Health Services. This includes the promotion and application of workplace relations, workplace equity and diversity and workplace safety.

  • CHS is leading the drive to digitally transform health service delivery in Australia through the implementation of a territory wide Digital Health Record. Computer literacy skills are required which are relevant to this role as you will be responsible for completing required documentation and becoming a proficient user of the Digital Health Record and/or other Information Technology systems; once proficient, you will need to remain current with changes, updates and contingencies. .
  • You will need to understand how the (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.

Please note prior to commencement successful candidates will be required to:

·         Be registered or be eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

·         Have tertiary qualifications or equivalent in Cardiothoracic Surgery (e.g. FRACS) and eligibility for membership of the appropriate professional organisation.

·         Hold a current driver’s license.

·         Undergo a pre-employment Police check.

·         Obtain a Certificate of Compliance from the Occupational Medicine Unit (OMU) relating to assessment, screening and vaccination processes.

1.    Post graduate surgical and academic qualifications and experience relevant to the position, with a demonstrated commitment to the maintenance and further development of skills applicable to the area of Surgery, including involvement in further education and quality assurance activities.

2.    Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team and provide leadership where required.

3.    A strong commitment to the importance and provision of teaching at all levels, including medical, nursing, scientific and allied health professional staff, both postgraduate and undergraduate.

4.    Demonstrated commitment to research.

5.    Demonstrates understanding of, and adherence to, safety and quality standards, work, health and safety (WH&S) and the positive patient experience. Displays behaviour consistent with CHS’s values of reliable, progressive, respectful and kind.
