Career Medical Officer, Intensive Care Medicine
Maitland Hospital, Lower Hunter Valley NSW
2 x 0.8 FTE, fixed term temporary part time roles
We are seeking two suitably experienced Career Medical Officers to join our Intensive Care Team at Maitland Hospital.
The position will initially be a temporary fixed term role for 12 months with the possibility of conversion to a permanent role for the right candidates.
About the role:
The primary purpose of the role is providing a safe and collaborative care of patients needing critical care within the hospital. Ensure high level of communication between all staff involved in care. Working alongside JMOs and ICU Specialists as rostered to ensure timely and efficient care for patients requiring Critical Care services across the hospital.
Essential requirements:
- Qualified medical practitioner registered in Australia with at least five years post-graduate experience
- Minimum two years appropriate training and experience to undertake: Intubation and caring for patients undergoing mechanical ventilation, caring for patients with septic shock in multi organ failure requiring vasopressors and inotropes, insertion of CVC utilising aseptic precautions, monitoring of patients requiring CRRT, appropriate escalation to relevant specialists including ICU ss in a timely manner in event of patient deterioration.
The role of the Career Medical Officer in the Intensive Care Department is to:

  • Provide clinical care under the direction of the Director Medical Services, specialist team or consultant on site or on call to support the effective management of patients including provision of a high level of effective management of hospital patients.
  • Contribute to processes to improve the continuity of clinical care, coordination of services, patient handover, and discharge planning during and after ICU stay including completion of ANZICS database.
  • Contribution to key QI within the unit and across the district if required
  • Contribute to effective clinical management, transition to community care and discharge planning by: Encouraging effective handover procedures for hospital patients by establishing processes between shifts and between teams & monitoring use and function of handover systems
  • Demonstrate leadership in the effective co-ordination of care of hospital patients, by facilitating communication and coordination between specialty, administrative and community services groups
  • Support multidisciplinary team care by contributing to team building, mentoring and training
  • Support members of care teams by providing clinical advice and encouraging co-ordination of care of hospital patients through effective and timely communication
