About the Academy

Flinders University Academy seeks to be the pathway provider of choice for students seeking to study a University Degree in South Australia. As a wholly owned, independently run subsidiary of Flinders University, the Academy delivers Flinders University’s suite of pathway courses – ELICOS, Foundation, Diploma and Pre-Masters – using innovative teaching techniques within a highly supportive environment.

About the Role

As a team member of the Flinders University Academy, you will be an engaged educator responsible for delivering innovative and inspiring English language curriculum to international students across all levels within a wide range of programs within the Academy. Under limited direction you will take responsibility for all aspects of the learning experience, including development and maintenance of learning materials, teaching in classroom and via online environments, working one-on-one with students and creating, preparing, conducting, and giving feedback on assessments based on provided criteria and policies.

Reporting to the Director of Studies (ELICOS), the Academy English Language Teacher will work collaboratively with colleagues within Flinders University Academy and across the University to continuously improve their own teaching and the Academy’s English offerings to ensure the Academy provides students the best foundation for their academic careers.

More specifically, you will be expected to:

  • Deliver inspiring and innovative ELICOS teaching informed by an understanding of pedagogical best practice in the field.
  • Utilise a variety of face-to-face and digital teaching tools to provide a superior learning experience for international students.

Other responsibilities may include:

  • Actively participate in the educational quality improvement and review processes and maintenance of academic educational standards in collaboration with the Director of Studies.
  • Support the continuous improvement of the student experience by participating in the continuous improvement of the Academy’s ELICOS curriculum, educational practices and student success.

About the Person

You will be a creative, engaged and results focused educator who is passionate about supporting your students and creating a welcoming and inclusive environment in which they and your colleagues can thrive. You will have demonstrated experience working with international students, including the ability to communicate appropriately in a cross-cultural working environment. 

To be successful in this role you will demonstrate:

  • Recognised Bachelor’s degree in any field and a recognised TESOL qualification, with a preference for postgraduate qualifications.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with contemporary teaching methodologies and best practice in delivering ELICOS curriculum to international students, including a familiarity with online learning principles and tools.
  • Demonstrated experience in using a range of e-learning platforms for innovation in teaching and learning.
  • Outstanding record of excellence in delivering education to students from diverse backgrounds whose first language is not English.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a collegiate environment and to develop and achieve shared goals and objectives.
  • Demonstrated evidence of enhancing success for students including initiatives to facilitate international students’ integration into Australian society, culture, and educational institutions.
  • Demonstrated cross-cultural communication skills, including the ability to provide effective one-on-one support and counselling to international students with complex needs.

Prescribed Conditions for Employment 
It is a requirement of this position that the incumbent maintain a current Working With Children Check which is satisfactory to the University in accordance with the Child Safety (Prohibited Persons) Act 2016 (SA). 

A valid National Police Certificate which is satisfactory to the University will also be required before the successful applicant can commence in this position.
