The Ramaciotti Centre for Genomics is the largest genomics facility at any Australian University. Funded by NCRIS, and recognised as infrastructure of national significance, it is a leader in the application of cutting-edge genomics technology to life sciences and biomedical research. Equipped with the latest next-generation sequencing (NGS) technology, with high throughput microarray systems and a range of other platforms, the Centre is the technical powerhouse of genomics in the state of NSW. It supports research in universities, medical research institutes, publicly funded research agencies and in industry.

The role of Centre Director for the Ramaciotti Centre for Genomics is to lead, manage and build the Centre’s strategy and to represent the Centre in interactions with stakeholders internal and external to UNSW, within the federal and state funding system, with major project leaders, technology vendors and other partners. The Director will also conduct independent research and deliver excellent teaching and play a significant leadership role within its parent School, the School of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Science (BABS) within the Faculty of Science. It will also function in supporting the achievement of teaching and service missions with BABS and the Faculty.

Full-time (35 hours)

The role of the Centre Director reports to the Head of School, School of Biotechnology & Biomolecular Science, and works with the Head of School and Dean to contribute to the University’s strategy. The role has 1 direct report: the Centre Deputy Director and COO. Staff appointed to the Ramaciotti Centre report indirectly to the Director.

Specific responsibilities for this role include:
Centre strategic and operational management:
Provide strategic direction and leadership to enhance the overall performance of the Centre’s genomics activities.
Attain significant competitive government and industry funding to ensure the ongoing success and sustainability of the Centre, for its technology and staffing profile
Maintain and expand the Centre’s external relationships with major funding bodies, with industry partners and with major strategic research partners.
Define and implement the Centre’s strategic plan and vision, making use of processes and support from the School and the Faculty, the DVCRE and PVCRI.
Lead the Centre to ensure strong strategic alignment with the School, Faculty and University goals, and work collegially and constructively with the Head of School, Dean and Faculty Executive Team to contribute to the strategic direction of the Faculty.
Build and sustain positive relationships both internally with UNSW Schools and Faculties, and externally with business, government, professional bodies and community leaders to ensure the interests of the Centre are effectively promoted.
Constitute a Centre steering group and meet with members of this group regularly to discuss Centre aims, objectives, challenges and opportunities.
With the support of administrative staff, be responsible for the effective and efficient management of Centre resources and budget, and ensure that annual reports are produced on Centre activity and achievements.
Oversee the Deputy Director/Chief Operating Officer’s work to achieve the financial performance goals of the Centre/University by effectively managing the budget and financial resources.
Establish and maintain effective communication processes within the Centre, including the timely communication of information to staff and the consultation of staff on matters of importance to the Centre.
Identify and strategically target new staffing needs, retention of existing staff and, if necessary, staff turnover.
Foster an environment of high morale in the Centre.

Research and Teaching

Play a significant role in the leadership of the Centre’s collaborative research projects including an involvement in collaborative research applications
Engage, lead and foster a culture of excellence in research and deliver outstanding independent research of international significance including attainment of significant competitive government and industry research funding and publication of outcomes in high quality research outlets.
Deliver high quality teaching and student experience through guest lectures as and when required, utilising sound pedagogical methodologies and innovative technologies and from time to time, deliver teaching across a broad discipline.

About the successful applicant
(Selection Criteria)

To be successful in this role you will have/be:
A respected scholar in an appropriate discipline related to genomics with a deep understanding of core academic values and priorities in a leading international university.
Demonstrated track record of excellence, innovation, research and leadership in human genomics, or related area.
Record of outstanding contribution to teaching and delivery of high quality and innovative teaching and student experience at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
Demonstrated ability to manage and provide leadership and direction to staff in accomplishing goals and objectives, in a complex operational environment.
High level strategic leadership and management capabilities in managing people and leading effective teams to deliver specialised analytical services, and a capacity to foster a learning culture amongst staff and students, and to lead and manage change.
An ability to lead the formulation and implementation of financial and staffing plans including required financial skills and a demonstrated ability to meet budget targets.
Provide oversight for quality assurance and compliance with applicable standards and regulations.
Demonstrated commitment to strong collegial leadership and a capacity to build and maintain effective collaborative partnerships and negotiations within and external to the Centre to achieve the mission and objectives of the University.
Proven influencing and communication skills to work with and motivate diverse groups of people, both within and outside the University, to achieve agreed goals.
A strong strategic orientation, particularly in order to assess the Centre’s future needs and how best to meet them.
Experience in creating and maintaining a team-based management style that motivates staff to be personally accountable for performance outcomes.
An ability to understand the need to adapt to new challenges and environments.
Cultural sensitivity and a strong sense of equity, fairness and ethics in dealing with staff from diverse backgrounds and behaviour, and an excellent knowledge and understanding of equal opportunity principles and a demonstrated commitment to the implementation and development of EEO policies and programs at the strategic and operational level.
An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training
