ORGANISATIONAL OVERVIEW

Council on the Ageing (COTA) Victoria is the leading not-for-profit organisation representing the interests and rights of people aged over 50 in Victoria. For nearly 70 years in Victoria, we have led government, corporate and community thinking about the positive aspects of ageing.

COTA Victoria's strategic and operational focus is on promoting older age as a time of opportunities for personal growth, contribution and self-expression. We believe there are obvious National, State, community, family and individual benefits from this approach.

POSITION OBJECTIVE

The Chief Executive Officer will lead COTA Victoria ensuring that appropriate governance and management standards are met and that the organisation retains its position as the leader in representing the rights of older people.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Governance and Corporate Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage COTA Vic ensuring that all services and functions are carried out in accordance with the Board of Directors requirements.
  • Provide timely and appropriate advice to the Board of Directors on the operation of COTA Vic including emerging trends and challenges.
  • Work with the Board of Directors to develop a Strategic Plan every three years and annual Business Plans to implement the priorities established in the Strategic Plan as well as appropriate systems to assess implementation.
  • Ensure the organisation operates within the annual budget set by the Board of Directors.

Leadership

  • Develop and maintain a strong public profile for COTA Vic through liaison with senior government officials, all funding bodies, local government, and key individuals involved in ageing advocacy and community legal services.
  • Publicise and promote the work of COTA Vic through all channels including mainstream media.
  • Represent COTA Vic at appropriate local, state and national levels including the COTA Federation.

Human Resources

  • Ensure that COTA Vic meets its statutory obligations with regard to the Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations.
  • Ensure that COTA Vic complies with all obligations under Equal Employment Opportunity legislation including:

    • Ensuring that all policies and procedures prevent and eliminate unlawful discrimination
    • Promoting merit and equity in the workplace
    • Effectively promoting and managing diversity in the workplace
  • Develop and manage strategies to attract suitably skilled and qualified personnel.

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA

Strategy and Leadership

  • Visionary leadership and strategy development skills.
  • Demonstrated understanding of governance and ability to work effectively with a Board

Management

  • Outstanding capacities in leading and managing a range of organisational functions, including fostering a value-based and collaborative organisational culture.
  • Excellent people management skills, exhibiting a collaborative style plus the ability to support and enhance staff commitment and abilities.
  • Ability to work and lead in a changing environment by providing a reflective and learning centred approach, demonstrating a personal commitment to self-development.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Demonstrated commitment and skills in community engagement and advocacy.
  • Excellent skills in representing the organisation effectively to a variety of audiences.
  • High level networking and negotiation skills with a range of stakeholders, including government departments, peak bodies, business and community service organisations.

Other

  • Tertiary or post-graduate qualifications in a relevant discipline and/or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to understand and have empathy with older people and their issues.
  • An understanding and/or experience in the community legal sector.

SPECIFIC RESTRICTIONS/CONDITIONS

  • This role requires regular out-of-hours work and travel intra and interstate;
  • Must have current Victorian driver’s license;
  • Employment is subject to a satisfactory safety screening check;
  • Employment is subject to ongoing satisfactory police check.
