TALS specialises in providing advice and support in the areas of criminal, civil and family law to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living in Tasmania, and does so in a culturally appropriate, inclusive and supportive way. We also influence policy and law reform.
We are a Tasmanian, Aboriginal-controlled organisation. Our team deeply care about their work, clients and each other. We are strong advocates for social justice and making a difference in local communities.

The role
You will provide advice, information and representation in a variety of civil matters across Tasmania. The role also involves providing community legal education and creating referral pathways for matters TALS is not funded to assist.
If you have general experience in the following areas, we are keen to hear from you.
- Debt Recovery
- Discrimination
- Mental Health Tribunal
- Freedom of Information
- Tenancy
- Restraint Order/Family Violence Order
The role can be based in Hobart or Burnie.
Selection criteria
- Admission or eligible for admission as a legal practitioner in Tasmania.
- Experience working in a broad range of civil matters.
- An understanding of the social issues faced by members of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, and a genuine willingness to conduct your work in a trauma-informed way.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- A team player, working positively with colleagues and external stakeholders.
- High level of personal initiative, resourcefulness and diligence.
What we offer
A competitive salary is on offer and will depend on experience.
We also provide the option to salary sacrifice up to $18,550 per year (increasing your take-home pay). Our team also enjoy flex time benefits and generous leave provisions.
This is a fulltime position (part-time may be considered).The role is fixed term for a period of 6 months however can be re-negotiated.
Relocation assistance may also be provided and/or provision of a sign-on incentive to support you in your new role.
Requirements
The successful candidate will need to undergo a National Police Check and apply for a Working with Vulnerable Persons registration prior to commencement of employment.
A current driver’s licence is required, as travel may occur across Tasmania.
