What is VicHip?
VicHip (https://www.vichip.org.au/) is a new initiative undertaken by the Department of Orthopaedics at the Monash Children’s Hospital and the MCRI that aims to uncover the causes, refine the treatment, and improve the outcome for children and young adults who suffer from hip dysplasia. This initiative has been made possible by a MRFF grant.VicHip is a registry of all Victorian children who present with hip dysplasia and builds on an existing registry that now has over 1000 infants who have been recruited at RCH, which will expand to include patients at any age and from across the whole of Victoria. The registry is part of an international collaborative (Global Hip Dysplasia Registry) that brings like-minded institutions together to compare and contrast the outcomes of treatment and to conduct large data studies across countries.
At the same time, we are entering into a data-sharing agreement with Generation Victoria (GenV - https://www.genv.org.au/) which is a multimillion-dollar MCRI initiative to follow a two-year birth cohort of Victorian children through to adulthood. On this journey, all aspects of genetics, development, health, socioeconomic and education will be collected, providing a rich and diverse resource to integrate and interrogate to understand the questions we have about hip dysplasia.VicHip is not just a research tool but also a way to unify patients, families, and clinicians in pursuit of a common goal to refine our diagnostic and treatment protocols, provide excellent health information and resources, ensuring that all Victorians have access to good hip care and improved outcome from hip dysplasia at every age.
