About the Role

We are recruiting for two full-time ongoing co-director roles (Scientific Officer Grade 4), which will be based on Lizard Island. These are set for a four year term with an extension to ongoing employment.

The co-directors make an important contribution to the management and conservation of Australia's Great Barrier Reef by facilitating scientific research and education.

The co-directors are responsible for developing and administering all operations at LIRS, which include:

  • assisting visitors with pre-arrival trip planning and logistics
  • ensuring work is conducted safely, in an environmentally sensitive and sustainable manner, and within legislated requirements
  • development and maintenance of extensive facilities
  • budgeting, financial forecasting and handling accounts receivable and payable
  • managing and guiding development of the Lizard Island Fellowships and Grants program. 

The Co-Directors also work closely with the Lizard Island Reef Research Foundation to raise funds for the Station.

The roles are expected to commence in October 2024, with 2 months handover period.

You will be paid a competitive annual salary of $125,521 - $131,895 plus employer’s contribution to superannuation (currently 11%) and annual leave loading.

About You

The successful candidates will possess robust and durable academic, leadership, operational, and stakeholder skills and knowledge, enabling them to take on a broad range of responsibilities to ensure the continued success of the Station.

You must demonstrate: 

  • experience in effective leadership
  • ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders
  • a strong commitment to customer service
  • ability to plan and execute infrastructure developments
  • ability to prepare and manage budgets and to handle accounts payable and receivable
  • a high level of boating and scientific diving experience
  • knowledge of current applicable scientific diving and boating regulations.   

Essential requirements

  • A PhD in an area of marine science or extensive relevant scientific research experience.
  • Current (or ability to obtain current) relevant diving qualification (minimum Dive Master or ADAS or equivalent), occupational dive medical, first aid, CPR and oxygen resuscitation certificates. 
  • A vehicle driver licence and a boat operator licence.

About Lizard Island Research Station

The Australian Museum acknowledges the Dingaal and Ngurrumungu people as the Traditional Owners of Lizard Island/Jiigurru and pays its respect to Elders past and present.

A NSW government institution, the Australian Museum (AM) hosts the Australian Museum Research Institute (AMRI), which undertakes significant collections and impactful field-based scientific research. 

Established by the Australian Museum in 1973, the Lizard Island Research Station (LIRS) is an important part of AMRI and provides internationally renowned facilities for coral reef research. It is located on Lizard Island (Jiigurru) in the northern part of the Great Barrier Reef, about 270 km north of Cairns.

The LIRS encompasses shared accommodation; a fleet of boats; diving equipment, including scuba tanks and air filling facilities. Each year, LIRS hosts 350 researchers and assistants and supports around 100 research projects. School and university groups of up to 22 people also visit the station each year.

The successful applicant(s) will be required to pass a physical assessment since the work can be physically demanding and they will be living in an isolated location without ready access to professional medical facilities. They will also be subject to a national criminal records check.
