Job description

The Community Chaplain will use their skills, in a part-time role, 0.6 FTE, to assist relief of needy in the Sydney LGA with a range of social, physical, emotional and spiritual needs, by leading a pilot program of community care, over an initial three-year period.

St Andrew’s Cathedral is a strategic centre of gospel ministry to the people of the City of Sydney. Public Christian church services are conducted on Sundays, many other days of the week, and on state occasions.

We are also surrounded by many marginalised people with deep and diverse needs, some of whom attend our services and ministries, or simply seek food and drink from our offices, or sleep rough nearby.

The Community Chaplain would be a member of the Cathedral ministry staff and would report to the Dean, Sandy Grant. Anglicare would provide training, resources, and support for the Chaplain.

The Community Chaplain must display mature evangelical Christian faith and be a member in good standing of a local church. It would be expected you are willing to join one of the Cathedral congregations.

Responsibilities

  • Establish a ‘gathering mechanism’ to meet human need via provision of ‘City Care’ meal or similar.
  • Liaise with mobile service providers for the needy to provide practical assistance onsite.
  • Pioneer monthly
weekly ‘Street Chapel’ or similar, to minister to spiritual needs in word and prayer. * Explore other opportunities for the relief of the needy, incl. via our existing services.
  • Gather, train and lead a team of volunteers to assist in this community care.
  • Convene “life skill” seminars/courses on-site; refer more broadly to social service providers.
Desired Skills and Attributes
  • Deep motivation to encourage Cathedral members to ‘love our neighbour as ourselves’!
  • Relevant qualifications and experience in human services/social work/counselling or similar.
  • Preferably a theological qualification to diploma level or higher (or commitment to begin p/t).
  • Ability to gather, lead, equip, and grow a team of volunteers.
  • Ideally, some track record in pioneering new initiatives.
  • Personally optimistic, adaptable (given this is a pioneering position) and organised.
  • Commitment to upholding the standards of our code of conduct, Faithfulness in Service.
A full job description can be obtained from our Administrator, Lisa ( ).

To express your interest, please send your CV, detailing relevant experience, with at least 2 referees, including a minister from your church, to the Dean, Sandy Grant ( ).
