Conservation Rangers Leader

About the team

As part of the Environment and Heritage Branch, the Natural Areas Conservation (NAC) business unit oversees the daily management and showcasing of a 13,000-hectare estate containing significant and diverse biological values. Our team is dedicated to protecting and enhancing conservation reserves spanning from the McPherson Range to Southern Moreton Bay. 

About your new role

Lead the Natural Areas Conservation (NAC) Ranger team, ensuring day-to-day operations and park management activities follow best practices and are prioritised for the efficient allocation of resources across the natural area estate. 

You will lead a team of four Rangers who work together to present our world-class parks to the community and visitors, ensuring safety for public use and protection of biodiversity values. 

In your new role, you will implement plans and programs that improves and supports the management of the conservation estate across the City. Your leadership will inspire your team to deliver best practice management and service, fostering a strong sense of accomplishment. 

Team Responsibilities: 

  • Help lead the implementation of priority management actions for the City’s natural area estate. 
  • Project manage & implement natural area estate conservation management projects, and programs with a focus on continuous business and customer service improvement and compliance. 
  • Proactively manage Councillor and community requests and action timely responses, ensuring Councillors and relevant staff are kept up to date on the status. 
  • Provide technical support to team members and the general public, particularly with regard to problems or complaints from the general public in relation to the day-to-day management of natural areas. 
  • Oversee the condition scoring of the City’s fire management trails and the delivery of annual minor capital works programs; boundary security (gates and fences) and park signage 
  • Help manage vegetation management contracts, in particular the creation and maintenance of bushfire interface maintenance zones, dead, dying and dangerous trees and other vegetation buffers 
  • Provide contract supervision support to the bushfire team as required 
  • Help manage operational and capital budgets and meet/comply with corporate governance and reporting timeframes and procedures. 
  • Develop multiple year services contracts to ensure key deliverables are achieved as defined by key corporate strategies and plans. 
  • Help maintain and enhance NAC’s WHS management system and ensure that staff work safely in remote areas. 
  • Prepare Terms of Reference, scoping documents, business cases, briefing notes and Council agenda reports as required.

The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated ability to lead teams and support staff to help ensure that they achieve their goals and gain a sense of accomplishment each day. You will have demonstrated expertise in project management and contract development and supervision. In addition, you will possess proven financial and business management skills and enjoy the fact that your business skills will make a positive impact on the successful delivery of key conservation activities. We are looking for a team player with strong analytical and problem-solving skills as well as exceptional interpersonal and communication skills. Ideally, you will possess a Bachelor Degree of Environmental Science or equivalent knowledge. 

Candidates will be experienced conservation land managers with a passion for the environment and our community. You will be focused on and committed to the safety of your teammates, stakeholders, and park visitors.
